It was the first time The Marlowe had taken part in the international fundraising day (introduced as an antidote to Black Friday), making it one of the first major regional venues in the country to do so.

The money was raised in a variety of ways (bucket collections before and after the day's two performances of Dick Whittington, raffles, donations), and will go to The Marlowe Theatre Development Trust's Creative Opportunities Fund. The fund has been set up to help share the magic of theatre with children from disadvantaged backgrounds and those in care.

Helena Barber, The Marlowe's Head of Fundraising Development, was delighted with the amount raised and thanked everyone who contributed: "It was great to see our customers, staff and the wonderful Dick Whittington cast coming together to help children and young people experience theatre - some for the very first time. Thank you, all."

Dick Whittington is at The Marlowe Theatre until 8 January. For times, ticket prices and to book, call the Box Office on 01227 787787 or go to marlowetheatre.com.
