Fascinating Events on Offer to Celebrate Explore Your Archive Campaign
Two behind the scenes tours, on Tuesday 22 and Thursday 24 November, will provide a rare opportunity to delve deeper into the archive's fascinating collection, and two sessions on Wednesday 23 and Saturday 26 November will explore the changing face of Warrington over the years through a collection of historic maps.
Philip Jeffs, archives and heritage officer at Warrington Archives and Local Studies department, explained how the Explore Your Archive campaign provides a great opportunity to learn more about local history.
He said: "If you've ever wondered what lies behind the locked doors in the strong rooms, or requested a document and heard the receding footsteps and creaking doors in the search room, or you're just curious about what the archive is, then you'll thoroughly enjoy these behind the scenes tours.
"They will give visitors a fascinating insight into the amazing collections we have here in Warrington's archives, and a chance to learn how important storage is in preserving these items for generations to come.
"The basic history through maps sessions will be an intriguing way to learn more about Warrington's past and how the town's appearance has changed over the years, with some features being long gone and others withstanding the test of time."
The Explore Your Archive campaign, coordinated by The National Archives and The Archives and Records Association (UK and Ireland) is now in its fourth year and aims to increase public awareness of the essential role of archives in society and celebrate the wonderful collections on offer.
Michelle Hill, collections and archives manager, said the Explore Your Archive campaign is a great opportunity to highlight the amazing collections of Warrington Archives.
