Tonight Daniel Sofoluke was awarded the prestigious title of Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year 2019 at The Y, Leicester. Daniel triumphed in a closely-run competition, which saw a total of eight of the best up and coming acts - each selected by top comedy promoters from across the UK - who performed their best seven minutes in front of an esteemed comedy industry panel and a sold-out audience at Leicester Comedy Festival.

On winning the coveted title, said: "I feel shocked and honoured. Winning Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year and joining the ranks of previous winners is a dream come true. ".

London born, but now based in Manchester, Daniel uses his comedy to analyse issues both in society and his live, which results in some hilarious and thought-provoking stories.

Runners up include Reginald D Hunter (1998), Greg Davies (2003), Jack Whitehall (2008) and in 2004 Leicester based comedian Matt Hollins beat Russell Kane.

The judging panel for this year were: George Oliver (Editor, Leicester Mercury), Charlotte Lang (Glastonbury Festival), Andy Leitch (Off The Kerb Productions), Ian Walker (UNION Jack Radio) and comedy promoter, Rob Riley.
