Bill Russell to Direct New Production of PAGEANT at the Camden Fringe
By: BWW News Desk
Legendary musical writer and director Bill Russell (Side Show, Elegies for Angels, Punks and Raging Queens) reunites with actor Miles Western for a brand new production of Pageant, which ran in the West End and won Western an Olivier for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical. The show will play at the London Irish Centre as part of the Camden Fringe, before travelling to the Poole Lighthouse.
Pageant is a fabulous musical comedy about the world of beauty pageants - where six hopeful contestants battle to win the coveted title of 'Miss Glamouresse'. But this is no ordinary pageant: all of the 'girls' are played by men. With catchy songs, outrageous costumes and hilarious dialogue, the contestants compete in rounds including talent, spokesperson, ball gowns and swimsuits. Finally, their fate rests with a panel of judges selected from the audience. Who will it be?
Pageant debuted Off-Broadway in 1991 at the Blue Angel in New York, where it ran for more than a year before playing successful engagements on the West End and around the world. Writer/director Bill Russell is an internationally produced author of musicals for the stage. He received Tony Award nominations for his book and lyrics for Side Show. Elegies for Angels, Punks and Raging Queens (author; book and lyrics) has been performed around the world and Bill directed it at the Kings Head, Drill Hall and Criterion in addition to many theaters in America.
