The Lonesome Crowded West Presents THE RIVER LADY 5/4-14
By: Gabrielle Sierra
The Lonesome Crowded West presents an Equity Co-operative Production of The River Lady by David Widdicombe, running May 4 - 14, 2011 at the Theatre Passe Muraille Backspace.
David Widdicombe's (Wake, Dinosaur Dreams) two-handed masterpiece has not been produced professionally in Toronto in over a decade, and this production starring Daniel Chapman-Smith (A Christmas Carol, Soulpepper) and Arlin Dixon (Dancing at Lughnasa, Molly Mae Productions) promises to grip audiences. The River Lady follows the story of a drifter and a dishwasher connecting in an all-night diner, desperately trying to make sense of their simple lives as the night closes in on them.Director Matthew Gorman (Artistic Director, Cart/Horse Theatre) was drawn to the material for its visceral honesty, "This play has no agenda, it's just two well-written characters. It's about story, it isn't trying to hit any trendy social or political note, by remaining heartbreakingly normal it hits all the right notes. It's two-handed theatre at its best." Gorman's direction is perfectly highlighted by Travis Hatt's design; the set is minimal, not overly detailed or abstract, just like the play's characters, and is uderscored by a subtle and haunting sound design by Aynsley Moorhouse.Videos
