Shakespeare BASH'd Explores a Dangerous Leader with RICHARD III

Shakespeare BASH'd explores the current relevance of the rise of a dangerous leader in Richard III

Director: Julia Nish-Lapidus

Starring: Cosette Derome, Jade Douris, Jennifer Dzialoszynski, Suzette McCanny, Shalyn McFaul, Drew O'Hara, Trevor Pease, Catherine Rainville, James Wallis, Kelly Wong, Joseph Zita

Richard III runs February 6-11, 2018 at the Monarch Tavern (12 Clinton St).

After a sold-out start to their season, Shakespeare BASH'd returns to the Monarch Tavern with an exciting new staging of Richard III. Co-Artistic DirectorJulia Nish-Lapidus takes the helm for this bare-bones, visceral staging of the story of Shakespeare's villain king. Co-Artistic Director James Wallis, fresh off his second season at the Stratford Festival (Assistant Director: Romeo and Juliet), returns to the stage to play the title role.

Nish-Lapidus' Richard III pits Richard against the rest of the ensemble. The sides stare each other down throughout the show across a bare stage. Who will come out on top? Cosette Derome (Reign, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) enables Richard's dastardly plans as Buckingham, while her real-life husband Kelly Wong (Shaw Festival) plays good-natured Hastings. Associate Artistic Director Catherine Rainville (Shakespeare by the Sea, Classical Theatre Project) combats Richard as Queen Elizabeth, while Jennifer Dzialoszynski (Shaw Festival) navigates a complicated path as Lady Anne.

Rounding out this amazing cast are Shakespeare BASH'd veterans Suzette McCanny, Drew O'Hara, and Jade Douris. Welcomed to the BASH'd stage for the first time: Shalyn McFaul, Trevor Pease, and Joseph Zita.

Richard III is a classic that remains all too relevant in today's political climate. Exploring the abuse of power and the ability of the masses to remain blind to a false ruler, this production will have the audience questioning how easily they can be conned by a charismatic tyrant. Richard III is a can't-miss highlight of the Toronto theatre scene this winter!
