The New York Times reports the "peaceful" death of former New York City Opera and Metropolitan Opera star Mareen Forrester at age 79 in Toronto on Wednesday night. She had been suffering from dementia.

Since her 1956 debut in New York City at Town Hall, she performed with New York City Opera and the Metropolitan Opera, in addition to tours in Canada and Europe.

Forrester was the recipient of awards and honors such as Yale University's Sanford Medal (1983), the Canadian Music Hall of Fame (1990), and a star on Canada's Walk of Fame (2000). She served as a Companion of the Order of Canada (since 1967), as Chancellor of Wilfrid Laurier University (1986-1990), and an Officer of the National Order of Quebec (since 2003).

Forrester is survived by five children.
