Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia presents an innovative double-bill adaptation of the beloved children's bedtime classics GOODNIGHT MOON AND THE RUNAWAY BUNNY, part of the Discovery Theater Series for Families at PlayhouseSquare. GOODNIGHT MOON is a celebration of familiar nighttime rituals, while THE RUNAWAY BUNNY is a pretend tale of leaving home that evokes reassuring responses from the bunny's loving mum. Both tales feature endearing rabbit characters, and the soothing rhythms of bunny banter and dream-like imagery never fail to infuse young audiences with a reassuring sense of security. Mermaid's staged adaptation will bring a new sense of appreciation to stories that have delighted several generations.

Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia's creative adaptations of children's literature have mesmerized more than four million young people on four continents since the 1970's. Incorporating innovative puppetry, striking scenic effects and an original score, this production will provide young audiences with an effortless introduction to the performing arts.

Jim Morrow, Mermaid's Artistic Director, directed the new production and serves as Production Designer. Steven Naylor, Mermaid's Artistic Consultant for Music and Sound Design, created the soundscape. After completing a preview tour of Nova Scotia venues in late fall of 2008, the production launched its initial Canadian and US tour in January of 2009.

Born in 1910, Margaret Wise Brown, author of GOODNIGHT MOON AND THE RUNAWAY BUNNY, devoted her life to creating enduring and beloved stories for young children. As the author of two of the most classic bedtime books, Brown focused on the stories children wanted to hear. Instead of writing fairytales and fables, she believed children rather read about their own lives. Using this "here and now" philosophy, Brown was able to communicate with children while reaching into the soul of the child that was still very much alive inside her. Bringing her own inner child out helped Margaret Wise Brown create meaningful stories that will continue to lull new generations of children to sleep. Clement Hurd collaborated with Brown to create his engaging semi-abstract style which became world-famous with the publications of two of the 20th Century's best-known children's books.
