Dirty Dancing to Close in Toronto March 29

By: Feb. 16, 2009

Producer David Mirvish announced on Sunday that the Toronto run of Dirty Dancing, the Classic Story on Stage was to end after 582 performances on March 29th. The show recouped its costs back in December and has been running at a profit since then, and Variety reports that the closing has as much to do with the soft economy as with the need to open the theatre for other upcoming Mirvish productions.

Dirty Dancing performances begin October 31, 2007 ~ Royal Alexandra Theatre, which was the shows North American Premiere.

The show is written and created by Eleanor Bergstein, directed by James Powell with choreography by Kate Champion.

The show is" a coming of age love story involving the talented and headstrong dancer Johnny Castle and Frances 'Baby' Houseman. During her family's summer holiday at the popular Kellerman's resort, Baby, a doctor's daughter with dreams of joining the Peace Corps, meets Johnny, the guy from the wrong side of the tracks. Against all odds, they fall in love, learning life-changing lessons along the way. Dirty Dancing follows the highs and lows of their summer romance."
