BWW Review: NABUCCO at The Metropolitan Operaby Milette shanon - January 5, 2017"Power to the people" could very well be the mantra for the gorgeous opera Nabucco highlighted by the inspiring Va Pensiero chorus sung by the Hebrew slaves as they pray to G-d for their dream to return to their homeland of Jerusalem to take flight. As I sat in the Metropolitan opera house recently, witnessing the opera with several thousand others, I have to believe that there was no one in that audience who was not moved. Nabucco reminds us all that the Bible, like Shakespeare, is timeless. Its lessons span millennia and are repeated over and over again. BWW Blog: Bob Marks - Finding Music That Suits Youby Guest Blogger: Bob Marks - January 3, 2017Just as you would build a wardrobe, with varied outfits for different occasions and temperatures, your music repertoire book needs to feature a diverse selection of pieces to show you can handle different sorts of singing demands. Not every song can (or should be) a show-stopper, full of dramatic heft and long, sustained high notes at the top of your range. Sometimes, it's more important to demonstrate naturalness and vulnerability, or show that you understand the needs of a very specific musical style. It's valuable to have many different kinds of songs in your "toolbox" to exhibit the full scope of your strengths. The Artistic Director and Producer is Martin Santangelo, who founded the company in 1993. His wife is the brilliant force of Flamenco dance and choreography, Soledad Barrio. The venue lends itself to spirit and emotion, main ingredients of this troupe of dancers and musicians. The lighting is not elaborate, but it is an extremely effective part of the production. BWW Review: Jinkx Monsoon and Major Scales Find CHRISTMAS MOURNING Glory at the Laurie Beechman Theatreby Troy Frisby - January 2, 2017'Not every drag queen can belt that high.'
Throwing out that quip early on in CHRISTMAS MOURNING at the Laurie Beechman Theatre during the December 15 show, Jinkx Monsoon isn't wrong. It's part of what makes the RUPAUL'S DRAG RACE star, otherwise known as Jerick Hoffer, a rare bird: a genuine talent, a winner, and yet someone who seems to be underestimated and underrated at every turn, even nearly four years after their winning run on the show's fifth season.
