The Institute Of Jazz Studies At Rutgers University Acquires Arturo 'Chico' O'Farrill Music And Personal Archives

The Afro Latin Jazz Alliance is proud to announce The Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University is now the permanent home of the Arturo 'Chico' O'Farrill Music and Personal Archives. This marks the acquisition of the first major Latin jazz archival collection in the Institute's 60-year history. The collection contains O'Farrill's original music manuscripts, photographs, and sound recordings documenting his prolific career as a composer, arranger, and bandleader. Famed compositions such as 'Afro Cuban Jazz Suite,' 'Manteca Suite,' 'Carambola,' and 'Cuban Episode,' among others, are included in this acquisition for the Institute. The Institute is thrilled to add O'Farrill's illustrious archives to its collection to celebrate Chico's monumental impact in jazz during his lifetime.

The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) will present a programme featuring internationally-acclaimed conductor Leonard Slatkin and the renowned Eton College Chapel Choir. Choir Of New College Oxford Performs At Grace Cathedral, April 8

The San Francisco Early Music Society (SFEMS) is pleased to welcome The Choir of New College Oxford (New College Choir) in a joint presentation with Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. Under the direction of Robert Quinney, the choir will perform a program of Renaissance and Baroque music including works by Giovanni Pierluigi de Palestrina, Tom s Luis de Victoria, Josquin des Prez, John Taverner, Thomas Tallis and more. The program will also include solo organ works by J. S. Bach and William Byrd performed by Oxford scholars Timothy Wakerell and Charles Maxtone-Smith.

University Settlement Presents VEIL: TWO SISTERS

Created by NYC choreographer Cynthia Berkshire, the multimedia performance reveals two sisters lured into a link between the earthly and heavenly realms, as one sister calls forth the other from death. A poignant vision of our emotional and psychic lives, the experiential program invites the public to connect to their own processes of reckoning.

Nobel and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Toni Morrison's first novel comes to life at the Wells Theatre. The Bluest Eye, directed by Khanisha Foster, follows the story of young Pecola in 1940's Ohio who is pregnant at her father's hands. She is taken in by a loving family and cared for by brilliant and kind sisters, Frieda and Claudia. The character-driven play, both poetic and daringly funny, illuminates the destructive powers of racism and class dynamics while exploring the power of community through exquisite storytelling. The Bluest Eye is produced in collaboration with Norfolk State University Theatre Company.
