Sydney Theatre Company presents CLOUD NINE

By:
Rehearsals commence today for Cloud Nine, Caryl Churchill's witty exploration of the complex politics of human relationships, directed by Sydney Theatre Company's (STC's) Artistic Director Kip Williams following the success of his production of another of the playwright's beguiling works, Love and Information in 2015. Set and costumes are by STC's Resident Designer Elizabeth Gadsby, with lighting by Alexander Berlage, composition by Chris Williams and sound design by Nate Edmondson.

The cast is comprised of Matthew Backer, Kate Box, Harry Greenwood, Anita Hegh, Josh McConville, Heather Mitchell and Anthony Taufa. Performances are at Wharf 1 from 1 July to 12 August 2017 (Opening Night: 6 July 2017.)

Cloud Nine begins in colonial Africa, amidst the Victorian constrictions of corsets and empire. Audiences familiar with the playwright will know it's best to make no assumptions. While the second half is set more than a century later in modern London, despite the passing of many decades the family we meet in the first half have aged only 25 years. Churchill shakes things up further by having the actors swap roles between the two halves. Playing with the progression of time and exchanging of identities, Cloud Nine hilariously unpicks the realities of love, politics, gender, sexuality, age and class.

Kip Williams' most recent work for STC includes Chimerica, A Midsummer Night's Dream and All My Sons. Recent work by STC Resident Designer Elizabeth Gadsy includes The Testament of Mary, Disgraced and The Hanging. The two artists will be collaborating again in August for Sydney Chamber Opera's The Rape of Lucretia.
