Pinchgut Opera Now In Rehearsal For Winter Offering

Erin Helyard leads Pinchgut Opera into a new era this winter with two Australian premieres, including works by one of the most important French composers of the Baroque era, Jean-Philippe Rameau.

Opening on June 15 and running for 5 performances only, the 2017 season begins with two actes de ballets by Rameau directed by Crystal Manich, Anacréon and Pigmalion, together with a contrasting Italian intermezzo by Vinci.

The delights of love and booze are celebrated with an impeccably crafted triple bill showcasing some of Rameau's most deliciously perfect and joyous music, contrasted with an Italian intermezzo in the style of the period. L'Amour (Cupid) intervenes in an argument over the relative merits of wine in Anacréon and returns in Pigmalion to celebrate the power of love with the title character, a sculptor besotted with a statue he creates.

Taryn Fiebig leads an outstanding cast of party-goers. The Orchestra of the Antipodes will feature on period instruments, conducted by Erin Heylard.

Pinchgut Opera focuses on new creations of rediscovered masterpieces, bringing the music of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries to life with intelligence and passion. Pinchgut performances are presented in the intimate surroundings and superb acoustics of Sydney's City Recital Hall.
