Photo Flash: First Look at the Cast of THE SOUND OF MUSIC in Bankstown
The iconic family favourite musical, The Sound of Music, comes to the stage again this July. Featuring a full orchestra, beautiful sets and costumes, and a brilliant cast of musical theatre performers, this production promises all the ingredients needed for some good old-fashioned family entertainment.
The Sound of Music was the final collaboration between Rodgers and Hammerstein and became the world's most beloved musical. When a postulant proves too high-spirited for the religious life, she is dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of a widowed naval Captain. Her growing rapport with the youngsters and generosity of spirit gradually captures the heart of the stern Captain, and they marry.
Upon returning from their honeymoon they discover Austria has been invaded by the Nazis, who demand the Captain's immediate service in their navy. The family's narrow escape over the mountains to Switzerland on the eve of World War II provides one of the most thrilling and inspirational finales ever presented in the theatre.
The original Broadway production opened in 1959 and won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical. It was adapted into a film musical in 1965 starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, winning five Academy Awards. Our cast are avid fans of this classic musical movie, with those such as Simon Fry (Uncle Max) having watched the film many times: "the first time was when I was 5 years old. I fell in love with Julie Andrews, my childhood sweetheart."
The Sound of Music features an unforgettable score that includes some of the most famous songs ever performed on stage, including My Favourite Things, Edelweiss, Do-Re-Mi, Sixteen Going On Seventeen, The Lonely Goatheard, Climb Ev'ry Mountain and the title song, The Sound of Music.
