PACT Afterglow Presents Two New Works By First Nation Artists

By: Oct. 30, 2017

PACT Centre for Emerging Artists will present the world premieres of two provocative works by First Nations artists as part of their final Afterglow Season for 2017.

Afterglow showcases new works by some of Australia's most compelling emerging performance makers. A double bill, Shifting > Shapes will be presented by Thomas E.S. Kelly (of Karul Projects) and Fem Menace by Cheryn Frost.

An intense and highly physical work, Shifting > Shapes explores the idea of shapeshifting and true identity through contemporary choreography combined with voice and physical percussion. The work extends from Kelly's cultural practice as a proud Bundjalung and Wiradjuri man of Queensland and New South Wales.

Alongside performers Tahlee Leeson and Catherine McNamara, Frost will present Fem Menace, a powerful work that explores the idea of the monster within us all. Through a kaleidoscope of music, spoken word and physical performance, Fem Menace invites the audience into a surreal, fragmented party. A Yuwaalaraay woman, the work echoes Frost's passion as an advocate, feminist and creative.

Launched in 2015, Afterglow celebrates artists that take risks, test ideas and devise unique methods of audience engagement.

PACT Artistic Director and CEO, Katrina Douglas, said, "Both works reflect the experimental practice and rigour of these incredible artists. We commissioned the two works nearly a year ago, and it's been fantastic watching Thomas and Cheryn develop their ideas into provocative performances. I cannot wait to share them with Sydney audiences!"
