Jimi Bani Stars in TITLE AND DEED at Belvoir

By:

Title and Deed is a uniquely Indigenous take on an international theatre hit.

We all come from blood and saltwater and a screaming mother begging us to leave.

Playwright Will Eno's break-through play Thom Pain (based on nothing) catapulted him to world-wide acclaim and a Pulitzer nomination. In Title and Deed he once again crafts a monologue of such disarming wisdom that it seems as if it were not written down at all.

The Slightly Foreign Man is called The Traveller. He tells us from the outset he is 'not from here'; his eccentric world is our world too - but seen through the eyes of someone who looks in from the outside.

Is he a migrant? Refugee? A prophet from the wilderness to remind us who we are? Or is he from somewhere even further away?

Jimi Bani has made his mark on stage and screen - winning acclaim for his portrayal of Eddie Mabo in the telemovie Mabo, and delighting Belvoir audiences in Peter Pan and The Sapphires. Jada Alberts made a startling playwriting debut with 2014's Brothers Wreck along with leading roles in This Heaven and Cleverman (ABC1); with Title and Deed she makes her next debut as a director. Between them they'll bring a distinctly Australian perspective to this international hit.

Indigenous theatre at Belvoir is supported by The Balnaves Foundation. General Manager of The Balnaves Foundation Hamish Balnaves said:

'We strongly believe that theatre has the ability to connect Indigenous culture and history with current social debate in an impactful and relevant way. Our partnership with Belvoir aims to not just encourage and support Indigenous playwrights in their writing, but to see their story and vision through to production. As a previous recipient of The Balnaves Award, we are incredibly excited to see Jada Alberts' interpretation of Title and Deed, and have no doubt Jimi Bani's performance will be one not to be missed.'
