The Sheldon presents Kathy Mattea: "Songs and the Season," Friday, December 10 at 8 p.m. in the perfect acoustics of the Sheldon Concert Hall. Kathy Mattea rings in the season with joy and good news! Based on her two popular Christmas albums, Joy for Christmas Day and Good News, her show's spiritual message is shared through a thoughtful blend of old favorites and new songs.

Multi-award winning vocalist Kathy Mattea has followed a path of discovery throughout a career spanning seventeen albums. The inner of two Grammy Awards, four Country Music Association and two Academy of Country Music Awards, including two for Female Vocalist of the Year, Mattea signed with Mercury Records in 1983. Since then, she has charted more than two dozen Top 40 hits on country radio, including eighteen Top 10s and four number one singles, including the classic "Eighteen Wheels and A Dozen Roses."
During the early '90s, as country music exploded behind the phenomenon of Garth Books, Mattea began to push her own musical boundaries. Her music got rootsier and more eclectic, evidenced by 1991's ambitious Time Passes By featuring Emmylou Harris, the Roches and Scottish singer-songwriter Dougie MacLean. The album's title track and "A Few Good Things Remain" both hit the Top10. "I became musically restless," Mattea says. "Country music, as a format, seemed to be narrowing down again, at the time I was exposed to all this cool Celtic and world music."

Now Kathy Mattea has embarked on an exciting new phase of her musical journey with the Grammy nominated album Coal, which pays tribute to her mining heritage. Whatever the music, whatever the style, the feeling behind it is what Kathy Mattea treasures most. "At the end of the day music has to move me on a gut level. I think it's just about making some kind of connection with people, and I try to do that by staying connected with it myself."

Tickets for Kathy Mattea are on-sale now! Tickets are $40 orchestra/$35 balcony. Call MetroTix at 314.534.1111 or visit www.TheSheldon.org. For more information, contact The Sheldon during normal business hours, Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
