The Sheldon presents Steve Tyrell, Saturday, May 1, 2010 at 8 p.m. in the perfect acoustics of the Sheldon Concert Hall. KWMU host Dennis Owsley will present a pre-concert talk, "The Great American Songbook," at 7:10 pm. Grammy Award-winning vocalist Steve Tyrell is truly a renaissance man. In his four decades in the music business, he is a two-time Emmy nominee and has achieved great success as a performing artist, producer, and songwriter. Tyrell helped to re-invent and re-popularize classic pop standards for a modern-day audience, and has worked with legendary artists such as Rod Stewart, Diana Ross, Ray Charles, Burt Bacharach, and Stevie Wonder.
While successful in producing hits for artists ranging from Dionne Warwick to Grammy-winner Rod Stewart, Tyrell himself has sold hundreds of thousands of albums and gained a passionate following all over the world. His most recent album, Back to Bacharach, a deeply personal collection of songs from the piano of Burt Bacharach and the pen of Hal David released in 2008, is the result of years of collaboration and a diverse career.
With his breakthrough performances in Father of the Bride and Father of the Bride II, Tyrell was rediscovered as an artist, singing "The Way You Look Tonight." He has gone on to record albums A New Standard; Standard Time; This Time of Year; This Guy's In Love; and Songs of Sinatra all of which were recognized on the Billboard jazz charts.
