Emma Wisniewski Joins Cast of SOUPS, STEWS, AND CASSEROLES: 1976 at The Rep

By: Jan. 27, 2014

Actress Emma Wisniewski, a Queens native and graduate of NYU-Tisch, will join the cast of award-winning playwright Rebecca Gilman's Soups, Stews and Casseroles: 1976, a world-premiere play commissioned for the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis. Rehearsals begin in St. Louis on February 18th, and the play runs March 12th-30th.

Soups, Stews and Casseroles: 1976 is set in Monroe, Wisconsin, a small town which turns into a battleground when its main employer is acquired by a major manufacturer. Kim, a family man and lifelong factory employee, must choose between union loyalty and a promotion that offers his family a better future. Emma will play the role of Kelly, Kim's overachieving and idealistic teenage daughter.

The role of Kelly resonated deeply with Emma, who says "it's so gratifying to portray a truly intelligent young woman who cares about the world around her. As a teenager, I remember being really inspired and encouraged by the strong female characters I saw on the stage, and it's always a joy to give that back to audiences." She is also a longtime admirer of Rebecca Gilman's work, and says of her: "working with her is a bucket-list item for me. I'm completely thrilled."

Soups, Stews and Casseroles is the first regional production for Emma, a New York actress born and bred: while attending Frank Sinatra High School for the Arts in Astoria, she participated in productions at LIC hot spot The Secret Theatre. She then received her BFA from NYU-Tisch, and last fall made her Off-Broadway debut at the Pearl Theatre Company, a beloved New York institution, in their highly-acclaimed production of Shaw's You Never Can Tell. "New York has given me everything in terms of my career," she says, "but I'm very excited to see what St. Louis has to offer."

Emma Wisniewski is represented by Don Buchwald & Associates.

Review: PROFESSOR SUNSHINE'S TRAVELING POST-APOCALYPTIC ROCK 'N ROLL REVIVAL at Blue Strawberry Showroom and Lounge

Kelly Howe follows up her incredible performance as Linda Ronstadt with another dynamic rock ‘n roll performance highlighting her immense range. She uses every type of timbre and quality from falsetto to chest/head voice and belt. While the song set won’t be revealed in this review in order to keep some of the mysterious fun of production, Howe does get to tear into the music of Jimi Hendrix, The Animals, Led Zeppelin, Tears for Fears, Patti Smith and Roy Orbison. Howe’s big voice delivers and rocks the house in a Stevie Nicks-esque performance. The music she and Hanrahan chose to include in this show offers something for everyone across generations of music lovers. The musical highlight of the night was 1978 hit “Because the Night” by The Patti Smith Band that was again covered in 1993 by 10,000 Maniacs featuring Natalie Merchant on vocals. Howe slayed this song while the audience nodded along with the drumbeat. One thing is certain, Howe knows how to deliver a rock ‘n roll song with grand panache.
