Emily Keeler, San Francisco Arts Education's Artistic Director, announced today that the San Francisco Arts Education Project's 2017 production is the classic Broadway musical Carnival, which introduced the song "Love Makes the World Go 'Round." A troupe of 43 young people, ages 9 to 14, revive this Broadway musical gem from 1961 with a book by Michael Stewart (Bye Bye Birdie, Hello, Dolly!, 42nd Street) and a score by Bob Merrill (Funny Girl, Sugar) and based on the 1953 film Lili starring Leslie Caron.

It's just about a week now since the Broadway World Audience Choice Awards were announced, and here in Maine, we are happy to report that all the certificates have been sent and the individual winners congratulated. In Brunswick, the home of Maine State Music Theatre Artistic Director Curt Dale Clark and Managing Director Stephanie Dupal received a special plaque to congratulate the theatre for having swept the Audience Choice awards two years in a row, garnering 10 in 2015 and 11 in 2016 and for having been selected Critic's Choice for the past three seasons. Among the other companies with multiple winners in 2016 were Portland Players and Portland Stage. A toast to 2016 and on to another great Maine theatre season in 2017!

Matrix Theatre Company continues its 2016 - 2017 Mainstage Season with the professional world premiere of Abbey Fenbert's satirical comedy, Intentions, opening February 3 and running through February 26. Studio Tenn and Tennessee Performing Arts Center's joint venture to produce Andrew Lloyd Webber's Evita in Nashville resulted in the production claiming the top prize as "Outstanding Musical of The Year" at Sunday's Midwinter's First Night event at The Larry Keeton Theatre. Nashville Repertory Theatre's production of Nate Eppler's original play Good Monsters took the title of "Outstanding Play of The Year" in the annual ceremony that dates back to its origins in 1989.
