'The Art of Matrimony' Exhibit to Open at The Jewish Museum, 3/11

One of the world's foremost collections of decorated Jewish marriage contracts (ketubbot) is held by The Library of The Jewish Theological Seminary in New York City. Thirty of the finest will be on display at The Jewish Museum in The Art of Matrimony: Thirty Splendid Marriage Contracts from The Jewish Theological Seminary Library from March 11 through June 26, 2011. From one of the earliest known decorated pieces (twelfth century) to recent creations, these exquisite marriage contracts provide a wealth of information on the artistic creativity, cultural interactions, and social history of the communities in which they were created. Ketubbot, which typically record the bridegroom's obligations to his bride in case of death or divorce, have been integral to Jewish marriage for millennia. They were kept in the homes of married Jews living in the West under Christian governance or in the East under Muslim rule

Harris Theater Announces Hear The Music Season

California Symphony unveils a World Premiere by internationally-recognized composer Cindy Cox in its upcoming concert, to be helmed by guest conductor George Cleve. The new work by Cox is an orchestral piece for the entire symphony with extra timpani, entitled En espiral. The program also includes the Flute Concertino, op. 107, D major by French composer Cécile Chaminade, Concerto for Clarinet and Viola, op. 88, E minor by Max Bruch, and Antonín Dvo?ák's Symphony No. 7, op. 70, D minor. This concert will be performed 4:00 pm, Sunday, March 6, 2011 at The Lesher Center for the Arts, 1601 Civic Center Drive, Walnut Creek. Canadian Stage is proud to partner with Vancouver's Electric Company Theatre to bring a fascinating production of Studies in Motion: The Hauntings of Eadweard Muybridge to Toronto audiences. The show is a visually and physically explosive spectacle, drawn from the life and work of 19th century photographer Eadweard Muybridge. From September 16, 2010 to January 10, 2011, the Neue Galerie will present exhibition of work by the eighteenth-century artist Franz Xaver Messerschmidt. Organized by Guilhem Scherf, chief curator of sculpture at the Musée du Louvre, the exhibition will be on view ?rst at the Neue Galerie, then travel to the Louvre, where it will be on view beginning in late January 2011. This will be the ?rst major museum Franz Xaver Messerschmidt, The Yawner, 1771-81, pewter exhibition in the United States devoted exclusively to this artist, and it will be the ?rst collaboration between the Neue Galerie and the Louvre. The show will extend the mission of the Neue Galerie, showing the roots of Expressionism and providing for a more complete understanding of the works in the museum collection. It will be accompanied by a full-scale catalogue, to be published by Of?cina Libraria. Franz Xaver Messerschmidt (1736-1783) ?rst made his mark in Vienna, where he enjoyed a successful career, including several royal commissions. Working in a neoclassical vein, Messerschmidt produced some of the most important sculptures of the eighteenth century. He presented the individual features of his subjects in a way that did not idealize them. No other sculptor in Vienna at the time was similarly uncompromising when Franz Xaver Messerschmidt, Afflicted with Constipation, 1771-83, lead-tin alloy producing portraits.

The Boston Pops world premiere of The Dream Lives On: A Portrait of the Kennedy Brothers, which will take place at Boston's Symphony Hall on May 18 and 19, is set to receive a live audio recording for later release. The event will also be documented in a video exclusive, featuring interviews with composer Peter Boyer, lyricist Lynn Ahrens, and conductor Keith Lockhart, as well as excerpts from the show itself.
