We have a feeling Broadway fans are going to love the 2016 Boston Pops season, running May 6-June 18, under the direction of conductor Keith Lockhart. Lincoln Center's American Songbook series, a perennial highlight of New York City's arts season, is coming to Mesa. For the first time ever, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts has curated an additional American Songbook event, March 3-5, 2016, for Mesa Arts Center's intimate 550-seat Piper Repertory Theater. Performers for the Mesa series include cellist and songwriter Ben Sollee on March 3; vocalist and Orange is the New Black star Lea DeLaria on March 4; and actor/actress and Broadway greats Norm Lewis and Patina Miller in a shared evening on March 5.
The Santa Barbara Symphony, under the baton of Maestro Nir Kabaretti, will usher in the year 2016 with a rousing New Year's Eve pops concert at the historic Granada Theatre in downtown Santa Barbara. Featuring a guest appearance by award-winning soprano Lisa Vroman, and a program of popular classics and favorites from stage and screen, the performance will begin at 8:30 pm. Abingdon Theatre Company has appointed Tony Speciale as its next Artistic Director. Mr. Speciale, currently represented Off-Broadway as director of The Absolute Brightness of Leonard Pelkey, succeeds Jan Buttram, who leaves her post after 22 years. Mr. Speciale begins October 1.

By far, my largest collection of non-English cast CDs consists of Japanese cast recordings, many of which were released by Gekidan Shiki (Shiki Theatre Company). With breaking news arising late last week of Glenn Close being considered for a return to her Tony Award-winning role in Andrew Lloyd Webber, Don Black and Christopher Hampton's Tony Award-winning Best Musical SUNSET BOULEVARD as well as the show's anniversary of its original West End world premiere opening on July 12, now is an absolutely opportune time to turn back the clock to 1993 and see what precisely makes SUNSET BOULEVARD so spectacular - and muse on some of the major talent that could bring the type of big-time attention that would warrant a major revival of the musical, whether on Broadway, the West End or even the silver screen. Given that the original Billy Wilder film was penned with Gloria Swanson in mind and ultimately became a roman a clef of sorts for the unique star as well as considering the sordid history of original lead Patti LuPone and her odyssey in starring in the show, not to mention the victorious and memorable highs achieved by the leading ladies who have headlined the show - which, post-Close, included Betty Buckley, Rita Moreno, Diahann Carroll, Elaine Paige and more - the role is ripe for a star of epic proportions to introduce one of Andrew Lloyd Webber's most acclaimed musicals to a new generation. And, the time is now. The possibilities are virtually endless, but here are some particularly delectable ideas as we begin to consider who would be absolutely ideal for a new Norma Desmond fit for 2015.
Ultimately, THE GALLOWS is kind of like R.L. Stine's Phantom of the Auditorium meets GRADUATION DAY (1981). But found footage. With a supernatural twist. While I may not be able to recommend either of those over THE GALLOWS, I can't really recommend THE GALLOWS either.
Baltimore, Md. (March 23, 2015) - For the conclusion of the 2014-2015 season, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) and Music Director Marin Alsop lead the BSO premiere of Leonard Bernstein's comedic operetta Candide tonight, June 11 at the Music Center at Strathmore, and June 12 through June 14 at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. The BSO announced today that the semi-staged production of Candide will be directed by Garnett Bruce and features an all-star cast including Peter Sagal, the host of NPR's weekly current events quiz show "Wait Wait…Don't Tell Me," and Judy Kaye, Tony Award-winning star of The Phantom of the Opera. Rounding out the cast are Keith Jameson, Lauren Snouffer, Joshua Hopkins, Mark Diamond, Marie Lenormand, Stephanie Sadownik, Curtis Bannister, Patrick Cook, Andrew McLaughlin, Melissa Wimbish and Lewis Shaw.

The longest-running show in Broadway history, and one of the most successful stage productions of all-time, PHANTOM ushered in Broadway star James Barbour in the title role on February 9, 2015.
Baldwin-Wallace University today announced alumni Mark Danni of Naples, Florida has been named a 2015 Outstanding Educator. Born and raised in Buffalo, NY, Danni is a 1988 graduate of Baldwin-Wallace University.
Jan Buttram, a founding member of Abingdon Theatre Company will step down from her current position as Artistic Director next year, at the end of the organization's 2015-2016 Season in June 2016. Abingdon has begun a nationwide search for a new Artistic Director.
Cameron Mackintosh's spectacular new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA broke the two-week 16 performance box office record at the Fabulous Fox Theater in St. Louis, MO, grossing $4,527,831 for the March 3-15, 2015 engagement. PHANTOM further cemented its place as the all-time box office leader at the Fabulous Fox with 241 performances over 7 engagements drawing 815,000 attendees and generating more than $40 million in box office receipts since the title's 1993 St. Louis premiere.
