Regional Opera Company of the Week: Minnesota Opera
by Scott Frost - Feb 7, 2013

Minnesota Opera stems all the way back to 1963 when The Masque of Angelsby Dominick Argento was commissioned by the Walker Art Center for its performing arts program, Center Opera. The group continued to grow until it became its own entity in 1969 and changed the name in 1971 to the Minnesota Opera. The company quickly became known as an 'alternative opera company' to complement the traditional Metropolitan Opera tour that came through each year and the St. Paul Opera Company but in 1975 Minnesota Opera and St. Paul Opera merged and set their focus on both traditional repertory and contemporary opera.

Bard SummerScape 2013 Season Announced
by BWW News Desk - Feb 5, 2013

Russia's profound and far-reaching impact on 20th-century culture will be explored at the 2013 annual Bard SummerScape festival, which once again offers an extraordinary summer of music, opera, theater, dance, film, and cabaret, keyed to the theme of the 24th annual Bard Music Festival, Stravinsky and His World. Presented in the striking Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts and other venues on Bard College's bucolic Hudson River campus, the seven-week festival opens on July 6 with the first of two performances of A Rite (2013) by the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company and SITI Company, and closes on August 18 with a party in Bard's beloved Spiegeltent, which returns for the full seven weeks. Complementing the Bard Music Festival's exploration of “Stravinsky and His World,” some of the great Russian-born composer's most captivating compatriots provide key SummerScape highlights. These include the first fully-staged American production of Sergey Taneyev's opera Oresteia; the world premiere of an original stage adaptation of Mikhail Bulgakov's seminal novel The Master and Margarita; and a film festival titled “Between Traditions: Stravinsky's Legacy and Russian Emigré Cinema.” Together, SummerScape's offerings will continue Bard's yearlong tenth-anniversary celebrations for the Frank Gehry-designed Fisher Center, which commence with a month of special performances in April.

New York City Opera Opens Spring Season With POWDER ON HER FACE, 2/15-23
by Kelsey Denette - Jan 8, 2013

New York City Opera opens its spring 2013 season with a new production of Powder Her Face (1995), composed by Thomas Ades (b.1971) to a libretto by Philip Hensher (b. 1965). The world premiere of the opera, inspired by a sex scandal that rocked Britain in the early 60s, not only caused controversy, with its on-stage depiction of fellatio, but also propelled Ades to international recognition. Reviewing the premiere, The Sunday Times critic Paul Driver called Powder Her Face "one of the most striking new operas I have seen in years," and added, "From the tango of the overture to the tango of the close, one is on the edge of one's seat trying to catch as much as possible of the prolific, fast-altering, vividly etched and instrumentally outrageous detail of a score which is boiling with life."

Art Institute Announces WHEN COLLECTING WAS NEW Exhibition Through May
by Kelsey Denette - Jan 3, 2013

After the isolated beginnings of a market in the early 20th century, photography emerged as a respected and collectible medium in the 1970s--driven by the viability of commercial photography galleries, increasing auction sales, and the establishment or promotion of autonomous curatorial departments in museums such as the Art Institute of Chicago (where photography became a separate department in 1974). Longtime Art Institute supporter Robert A. Taub's wide-ranging collection charts photography's changing and innovative role as a market force in the 1970s and 1980s. When Collecting Was New: Photographs from the Robert A. Taub Collection, on view at the Art Institute through May 12, 2013 in Galleries 1-4, presents over 100 works from Mr. Taub's collection and is complemented by loans from private collectors and works from the museum's permanent collection. This fresh presentation of classic and overlooked material includes a wall with no fewer than seven different prints of Dorothea Lange's iconic Migrant Mother (1936); a gridlike, historically accurate installation of Garry Winogrand's masterpiece portfolio, Women Are Beautiful (1974); and never-before-seen photographs by Joel Sternfeld taken in the later 1970s at the Ford Motor Company.
