With the strains of 'Auld Lang Syne' mere moments away, minds are apt to be caught up in reflection, remembering the year now ending as a new one awaits just over the horizon. Certainly that's what I've been doing lately, looking back over the past year in Nashville theatre as I pencil in dates in my new 2010 (Here's a question to ponder: Is it 'two thousand ten' or 'twenty ten'...think about it and get back to me) calendar for the shows set to open in the months ahead.

Lynne Meadow (Artistic Director) and Barry Grove (Executive Producer) are pleased to announce Golden Globe nominee Sarah Paulson ('Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip,' The Glass Menagerie) will join Tony Award winner Linda Lavin in Manhattan Theatre Club's upcoming Broadway premiere of Donald Margulies' COLLECTED STORIES to be directed by Lynne Meadow at MTC's Samuel J. Friedman Theatre (261 West 47th Street).

The Shakespeare Society will host an evening entitled MARLOWE VS. SHAKESPEARE: RIVALRY, IMITATION, & INFLUENCE, which will be held at the Kaye Theatre on November 9th. The evening will feature Broadway's John Douglas Thompson and Matthew Rauch, as well as Columbia University professor James Shapiro. The evening will be a discussion of the Elizabethan authors, Marlowe and Shakespeare, and their works.

The Shakespeare Society (Michael Sexton, Artistic Director) will present Marlowe vs. Shakespeare: Rivalry, Imitation, and Influence, featuring John Douglas Thompson who plays the title role in the acclaimed Irish Rep revival of The Emperor Jones in a performance that was called "wondrous" by Ben Brantley in The New York Times; Matthew Rauch who currently stars in Still Life at MCC; and Columbia professor James Shapiro, author of the acclaimed book 1599: A Year in the Life of William Shakespeare, on Monday, November 9 at 7:00pm at the Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College, East 68 Street, between Park and Lexington Avenues.

MCC Theater (Robert LuPone, Bernard Telsey, Artistic Directors; William Cantler, Associate Artistic Director; Blake West, Executive Director) has announced casting for two productions of its 2009-10 season.

A new musical about the South African struggle for freedom from apartheid and the leaders of that movement will be based in part on a forthcoming memoir by Zindzi Mandela, assisted by South African theater veteran Welcome Msomi.
