Multi-platinum and award-winning country quartet LONESTAR has announced that their new album, LIFE AS WE KNOW IT, will be released Tuesday, June 4 via the band's own 4 Star Records, in partnership with The Orchard.
In all honesty, there really is nothing more fun than seeing the next generation of musical theatre talent put on a great production of one of Broadway's mega-hits. Fortunately for Houston audiences, that's exactly what is happening in HSPVA's Black Box Theatre, as the school presents Jonathan Larson's RENT. Even with some altered lyrics and cut songs, the edgy production pushes envelopes as far as a public high school production can. Please note, the production is still recommended for mature audiences only.
It's April 1st. Do you know when your Spring is coming? During another longggggg New York winter, the good news is that there were a ton of warming cabaret shows. The bad news is that there were so many, even during this seemingly endless winter our intrepid reviewer Stephen Hanks didn't have enough time to review them all right after the performances. So in what is becoming a seasonal ritual, here he offers yet another compilation of 13 'catch-up' cabaret show reviews.

In a culture so focused on youth, it is easy for older adults to feel that their life is destined to be boring or fruitless after a certain age. According to Dr. Helen Mendes Love, MSW, this could not be further from the truth. In her new book "Reflections on the Upsides of Aging: Living with Joy and Purpose after Age 50," Dr. Mendes Love presents selections of scripture backed up by social science research proving that life after 50 can be the best period of life.
With the addition of an epilogue which shows readers how she has dealt with the tragedy of losing her daughter and her journey since then, "It Can Happen to Any Family: How Drugs Took My Daughter's Life" (published by Inspiring Voices) is author Cynthia Doucette's revamped attempt to reach families before it is too late.
I don't make a habit of reading a press release up front, because I like to be surprised. If someone had told me that I was going to see a one-woman show about an actress' life, my first comment would have been, 'Oh, please! What did she overcome? Alcoholism, drug abuse, rape, paternal or spousal abuse?' Such is the content of many one-person shows nowadays, to the point where you just do not wish to be bored to death as you listen to another depressing story. Well, much of Annie Abbott's life has surely not been a bed of roses, but what she did with lemons - she actually did convert them into roses - is not only amazing, but hysterically funny and thoroughly worth experiencing.

In the critically acclaimed film, 'The Blind Side', the character Leigh Anne Tuohy takes in a mistreated boy. Her friends tell her, 'You are changing that boy's life.' 'No,' she replies stoically, 'he's changing mine.' This sentiment echoes how Dee Massengale felt about her adopted son Marial, one of the Lost Boys from Sudan. However, Marial tragically died on his 28th birthday in a car accident.

In 1975, Main Street Theater began with a dream of bringing quality theatre to Houston audiences. Whether we are actually existing or living in our imaginings, one thing is certain: Main Street Theatre has fulfilled its reverie for 37 years, and is continuing to do so with the opening of the first production of their 38th season-the Regional Premiere of Nilo Cruz's adaptation and translation of Pedro Calderon de la Barca's LIFE IS A DREAM.
Main Street Theater's production of Pedro Calderon de la Barca's LIFE IS A DREAM, translated by Nilo Cruz, began previews on Saturday, September 15, 2012. Following their first preview, I had a chance to sit down with Crystal O'Brien, who plays Estrella, and her husband Justin O'Brien, who plays Astolfo. On a lovely almost Fall-like Sunday morning, we met at the exquisite Prego on Amherst. Over a charming brunch we discussed LIFE IS A DREAM, acting together, what else they're up to this season, and successful relationships.
