Rehearsals are underway for Union Avenue Opera's (UAO) final production of the 2011 Summer Season. Having received exceptional reviews for Puccini's Turandot and Rossini's La Cenerentola (Cinderella), UAO will take on the challenge of presenting the Missouri premiere of Jake Heggie's Dead Man Walking, an opera The Associated Press regards as 'the most compelling new American opera in decades,' and The Washington Post identifies as 'an impressive piece of work.'

According to whatsonstage.com, British actress Maria Friedman will direct a revival of Sondheim's MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG at The Menier Chocolate Factory, in celebration of Sondheim's 80th birthday. Dates for the production are unknown at this time. Friedman is n stranger to the piece. She has not only appeared in the production, but also recently directed a student production at the Central School of Speech and Drama. The Menier Chocolate Factory has previously hosted other Sondheim revivals such as SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE and SWEENEY TODD.

O'Neil Center Names 2010 NPC Selections; Uhry et al. Named Playwrights in Residence

The Eugene O'Neill Theater Center announced today that seven plays will be developed at the 2010 National Playwrights Conference under the leadership of artistic director Wendy C. Goldberg. The selected playwrights will spend the month of July at the O'Neill's Waterford, Connecticut campus developing and presenting staged readings of their work during the NPC's 46th season. Box office and online ticket sales open Wednesday, June 9; advance ticket sales will be available to O'Neill Members beginning Monday, May 17.

The concerts will take place Thursday, February 25, 2010, at 7:30 p.m., Friday, February 26, at 11:00 a.m., and Saturday, February 27 at 8:00 p.m.
