Some stories are so emotional, so raw, and so real that it can be hard to tell it more than once. So, when someone draws up enough courage and strength to share these sometimes-difficult glimpses into their life – to quote a great American playwright Arthur Miller “Attention must be paid.” Such is the case with the Southeastern premiere of Jennifer Blackmer’s beautifully constructed and emotionally delivered play, I CARRY YOUR HEART WITH ME which is playing now through April 5th at Horizon Theatre Company in Atlanta. This powerful and captivating solo play, starring veteran Atlanta actor Carolyn Cook, takes the audience on a journey into a challenging and difficult time in American history through the eyes (and memories) of a woman who has an encounter during a formative year in her life that changes everything for her.

MOSS sang at Joe's Pub almost 20 years ago before making their first (and, so far, only) album. The occasional reunion of this group is an occasion for rejoicing! They were back for one of their regions and sound splendid. They are MOSS and they are marvelous.

Particularly in light of the 2016 documentary I Am Not Your Negro, author and civil rights activist James Baldwin is garnering new attention and appreciation for his astute analyses of race, class, and sexuality in U.S. culture. Our reading group will take up his groundbreaking semi-autobiographical first novel, Go Tell It on the Mountain (1953). Attendees are invited to read this seminal text that brought mid-20th Century African-American literature out of the shadow of Richard Wright while deftly exploring the post-Civil War Great Migration, its southern roots, its religious inflections, and its generational tensions. The suggested edition is the most recent paperback (ISBN 978-0345806543). Traditional New Orleans fare of coffee and beignets at Muriel's Jackson Square with lively discussion to follow led by Festival favorite and Southern literary scholar Gary Richards. Seating is limited to 50 persons; pre-registration is required.

Without a doubt, Soulpepper Theatre Company's Global Cabaret Festival is my favorite Toronto arts festival. It's like a box of chocolates - you never know what you're going to get. Forrest Gump would dig it. Each year I'm tempted to bring my sleeping bag and just camp out for the weekend.
