EDINBURGH 2017: BWW Q&A- Heather
About the show:
A reclusive children's writer becomes wildly successful. Her books are treasured across the country. But when a troubling narrative starts to unfold, we find ourselves asking: what matters more, the storyteller or the story? Brilliantly imaginative and theatrically original, Heather is a short, sharp play about language, prejudice and the power of stories.
Why bring Heather to Edinburgh?
The main thing that prompted us to bring it to Edinburgh: we want lots of people to see it and discuss it with us! We first performed an earlier version of the play a few years ago in Bristol and Glasgow. It went down extremely well and both Valentina (the director) and I were super-excited by it, so we've been looking for a chance to develop the play and give it a proper outing ever since and are thrilled that it's here.
What do you feel sets it apart from other shows at the Fringe?
It's such a unique premise, but at the same time very accessible. The story is about an artist with a big secret and it raises so many questions about truth, authorship, prejudice and language that I think people will really get a kick from talking about it. As a production, I think the way it blends intrigue, twists, experimentation, fun and poetry will definitely set it apart.
Why should people come to see it?
If people want to see a show that will prompt a discussion in the bar after, this is definitely the one. If you've got a Harry Potter or His Dark Materials fan in your group, you should definitely come. If you're interested in experimental theatre, language and stories you should definitely come. Oh, and if you just want to be told a cool story then you should definitely come!
Who would you recommend comes to see you?
Anyone looking for a show to really discuss with friends. Anyone interested in stories and literature. Any Harry Potter fans. Anyone who has discussed 'fake news' over the last year. Anyone who likes writing that challenges convention, that questions itself and that asks something from the audience. Anyone looking for a short, sharp shock.
Are there any other shows you're hoping to catch at the festival?
I can't wait to see How To Win At History.
