BWW Reviews: PARK, Theatre Royal, Glasgow, January 28 2015
The programme for Park states that it is a collision of physical theatre, athletic dance, funky music and delivers fresh statements about our time. The premise is that eight characters intertwine their stories during their time in an urban park. The performance was interesting to begin with as the characters were established but unfortunately it didn't manage to hold my attention. The storyline is very vague and the narrative is hard to follow.
The strongest points of Park were the collective dance scenes. The choreography is good, but it doesn't work too well for the solo performances. While elements of Park were enjoyable, the piece feels a little self-indulgent and a few of the sequences seem familiar and don't really add anything new to contemporary dance.
There is some good use of humour during the performance and the harsh clunky music used throughout is well suited to the piece.
While most of the audience seemed to really enjoy Park, it wasn't for me. While points of the performance were good in a technical way, it didn't make contemporary dance accessible for a general theatre audience.
