Florida Studio Theatre (FST) is pleased to announce a special event that has just been added to the 10th Anniversary Sarasota Improv Festival lineup-That's My Song: An Intimate Evening with Dick Smothers, a celebration of comedy legends Tommy and Dick Smothers, more commonly known as The Smothers Brothers. Remembered today as popular American comedians and musicians, The Smothers Brothers were among the first to perform improvised material onstage as part of their musical comedy performances. At this special event, Florida Studio Theatre will recognize the group's artistic contributions to improv at its milestone Improv Festival. FST's Managing Director Rebecca Hopkins will lead an in-depth interview with the one and only Dick Smothers, followed by a fully improvised hip-hop homage to the Brothers' groundbreaking work performed by North Coast, New York City's premier hip-hop comedy team. Studio Theatre (FST) opens its second show of the Summer Sidekicks Cabaret Season, The Music of the Night, featuring the gifted jazz and swing sextet, The Swingaroos. Called a "Stellar group of musicians" and "Impressive" by Jay Handelman of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, The Swingaroos bring their swingin'est versions of songs embraced by the worlds of theatre and jazz alike to the John C. Court Cabaret starting July 17.
Van Wezel Receives Over $100k In Grants

The Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall has received two grants totaling over $100,000 for the 2018-2019 season. The Sarasota County Commission awarded $93,481 to the Van Wezel as part of the Tourist Development Cultural/Arts Program, which ensures that tourist tax collections are reinvested in arts and cultural programming. Similarly, the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs awarded $9,950 to the Van Wezel from the General Support Program grant, an award designed to support organizations which further the state's cultural objectives.

Florida Studio Theatre (FST) is proud to announce its first show of the 2018-2019 Winter Mainstage Season: the Tony Award-winning musical, A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder. Called one of the "Most inspired new musicals in years" by The New York Times, A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder follows Monty Navarro, a lowly born Englishman who suddenly discovers he is ninth in succession to become the Earl of Highurst. Filled with remarkable music and killer laughs, this Broadway hit takes audiences on a journey through Monty's murderous hijinks as he pursues his "rightful" place in the family.
Florida Studio Theatre's Summer Improv Season Is Jam-Packed With Laughter

FST Improv announces its summer season with three distinct shows that will bring spontaneity, playfulness, and a bit of history to Sarasota. Playing through June 30 is the fresh and daring Comedy Freestyle, where audience members will see free-form improv-a challenging improv style with no rules or limits. Playing on July 7 only is When X Meets Y: American Revolution, FST's special holiday improv show celebrating Independence Day, which follows a band of American colonists fighting the British, but adds a thrilling romantic twist. Starting July 28 is Comedy Lottery, FST's short-form improv show built off the audience's suggestions and favorite games. All three programs play on Saturdays at 7:30 pm in FST's Bowne's Lab. Full menu and bar are available for all performances. Doors open one hour prior to the show. Sarasota Opera's Da Capo Society, the only young patrons group, ages 21 - 45, dedicated to a single arts organization in Sarasota, will host The Wizard of Oz themed costume contest Thursday, June 7th at 6pm to celebrate the launch of the new season of "Classic Movies at the Opera House." Launched in 2017, the "Classic Movies at the Opera House" series will occur twice monthly starting Thursday, June 7 and will include timeless films designed to be enjoyed on the big screen in the elegance of the Opera House. Each presentation will begin at 7:30pm.
