Second Wind Closes THE TENDER KING, 12/11

By:

Second Wind Productions presents the world premiere of Ian Walker's The Tender King, November 20th through December 11th at The Phoenix Theatre in San Francisco.  The international award-winner's new work explores the secret history surrounding the end of the World War One, and the decision to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Based on hundreds of recently declassified government documents, letters, diaries, and historical analysis, The Tender King is a controversial look at commonly held beliefs regarding the end of the war.  Weaving both fictional and real characters through a backdrop of real-life political intrigue, ambition, and brutality, it feels as relevant to the Iraq war today as the great war sixty years ago.   "Walker," writes the San Francisco Examiner, "explores fascinating philosophical themes and imbues his characters with passion and points of view."

Playwright Ian Walker has been called "one of the Bay Area's most promising emerging playwrights" by the Oakland Tribune, "a restlessly inventive pen," by the SF Bay Guardian, and "one of five hot African-American artists," by Theatre Bay Area. His works range over a dizzying array of topics, from our obsession with everlasting life to the woes of gravediggers.  The Tender King he calls a "sexy, provocative thriller, dipped in noir and served cold.  For a brief moment in time, anything was possible and anything permissable."

Second Wind Productions, now in its 24th year, creates theatre that engages people in social and political issues.  They see theatre is a tool for getting people excited about how they relate to the world and each other.

The Tender King performs November 20 through December 11 at The Phoenix Theatre, 414 Mason Street in San Francisco.  For more information, call (415) 335-6087 or visit www.secondwindtheatre.com. www.secondwind.8m.com
