CELEBRATIONS: AN AFRICAN ODYSSEY at Mixed Magic Theatre Rescheduled Due to Inclement Weather

Playwright/Composer Ricardo Pitts-Wiley wrote "Celebrations: An African Odyssey" in 1979 in San Diego, California. It was borne of an intense desire to create something for his six month old son. Celebrations was performed for more than 20 years in California, New York, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Detroit, Providence and Boston, and received national recognition as the featured theatrical production at the 1993 National Black Theatre Festival in Winston-Salem.Celebrations garnered national acclaim for the album produced in 1995.

"Celebrations: An African Odyssey" is the story of Jaharri, an African princess coming of age in her homeland when she is kidnapped and sold into slavery. But in the New World, on Christmas Day, in Newport, RI she finds that the humanity and courage of her people has survived even The Middle Passage. Jaharri draws strength from her new family, and with their help she escapes and returns home.

Celebrations: An African Odyssey In Concert uses elements of storytelling, African rhythms, traditional and gospel music to celebrate the greatness of the human spirit. It is a heart- warming and exhilarating story of enduring strength and faith for all ages and all time. The cast features Sakari Monteiro as the voice of Princess Jaharri, with Delbert Leon Collins, Danette Briggs, Jeannie Carson, Kim Trusty, Lauri Smalls, Anthony "Raidge" Burton,Yakim Parker, Lawrence Nunes and Steven Ellis.
