About the Album: Turnip Family Secrets,'; an innovative new musical by Michael Smith and Joe Woodard, opened in April of 2002 at Santa Barbara s Center Stage Theater. As part of the work process, the responsible parties went into Riviera Studios to document the experience in a cast album. With the help of engineer Wayne Sabbak, it took on a life of its own, and is now available on the Household Ink label. Smith, who wrote the book and lyrics, is the author of more than a dozen plays, including the recent 'Trouble'; and 'Dogs Bark All Night'; Woodard, who wrote the music, is a prolific songwriter and the guitarist with bands including Headless Household, Lean-To, and flapping, Flapping. In the premiere production, Santa Barbara favorites Fred Lehto and Paula Re played happy farmers, with Geren Piltz as their son David and talented 12-year-old Geoffrey Bell as both the Giant who terrorizes them and the Fairy who empowers David to save his parents. In addition to Woodard on guitar, keyboardist Dick Dunlap, percussionist Tom Lackner, trumpeter Nate Birkey and bassist Jim Connolly provided live music for the 18 songs. Of the opening night performance, Starshine Roshell of the Santa Barbara News-Press, wrote: Everything about the grownup musical fairytale 'Turnip Family Secrets' is delightfully imaginative: an outlandish storyline, ingenious scenic design, golden storybook lighting, and an inventive and flexible score that bends from sultry to sinister and bounces all the way back to snappy...'
