In response to the controversial Patriot Act of 2001, which allowed for wiretapping, surveillance, and other measures ostensibly to protect the United States against terrorism, five women wrote adaptations of Sophocles' ANTIGONE, a play about power, resistance, and what happens when we're denied those things most important to us.

A Language of Their Own by Chay Yew, a thoughtful, intimate, and emotional examination of ethnic and sexual identity in the face of the AIDS crisis. Oscar and Ming had been together for four years, but they break up after Oscar is diagnosed with AIDS.Despite beginning relationships with new boyfriends, neither is able to let the other go completely. They find navigating these relationships is just as complicated as when they were together - like learning and creating the nuances of a new language.

Portland Center Stage at The Armory debuts its new Northwest Stories series with Jeanne Sakata's Hold These Truths, a play inspired by the life of civil rights hero Gordon Hirabayashi, a Seattle native who was posthumously awarded the 2012 Presidential Medal of Freedom. Hold These Truths opens in the Ellyn Bye Studio on October 7, with previews beginning October 1 and performances running throughNovember 13. Hold These Truths will be directed by Jessica Kubzansky, who directed the world premiere at East West Players in Los Angeles. Actor Ryun Yu, who originated the role of Hirabayashi at East West Players, will once again play the role in Portland.

The Oregon Shakespeare Festival invites the public to its 29th annual Daedalus Project, a benefit for HIV/AIDS organizations. The 2016 Daedalus Project, themed "Time Flies," begins with the Daedalus 5K Run/Walk on Sunday, Aug. 21, and continues with a full day of fund-raising activities on Monday, Aug. 22, culminating in the Daedalus Play Reading and Daedalus Variety Show, which are both likely to sell out.
