Now in it's seventh season, the Obie Award winning The Fire This Time Festival is pleased to announce the play readings for their 2016 festival, which will run January 18-February 6 at The Kraine Theater (85 East 4th Street between 2nd Avenue and Bowery). In addition to play readings the 2016 festival will also feature 10-minute plays directed by Nicole A. Watson, excerpts of solo shows, excerpts from the plays developed in the inaugural writer's group, and a panel discussion.

For its seventh season the Obie Award winning The Fire This Time Festival has expanded to include an inaugural Writer's Group, which was created to help playwrights of African and African American descent develop new work during bi-monthly sessions over four months beginning in October, which will culminate in a public presentation of new works during the annual festival, January 18-Febraury 6, 2016 at The Kraine Theater (85 East 4th Street between 2nd Avenue and Bowery). The Fire This Time Festival Writer's Group, co-moderated by Cynthia G. Robinson (Nightfall in Season 4 of TFTT) and A.J. Muhammad (Assistant Producer of TFTT), aims to foster a nurturing, supportive and collaborative environment where playwrights can share work with their peers and receive constructive feedback during the early stages of developing a new project.

The 2016 playwrights will include Tanya Everett (Without Scars with Breast Friends), Keelay Gipson (The Lost at Planet Connections Theater Festivity; N/F at Downtown Urban Theater Festival), Jireh Breon Holder (2012-13 Kenny Leon Fellow, Alliance Theatre), Roger Q. Mason (Onion Creek with Son of Semele Ensemble, Los Angeles), Stacey Rose (2015-16 Dramatists Guild Fellow), Korde Arrington Tuttle (Beautiful Mess in Around the Block: a 5D Project), and Nia Ostrow Witherspoon (Global Arts Fund Grant for The Messiah Complex).

COMPANY CYPHER in association with AMY RAFA and SARAH STITES announce casting for the NYC Premiere of the award winning GUTTING, written by Jeremy J. Kamps and directed by Zoey Martinson. The play follows fourteen-year-old Kali returning home to post-Katrina Lower 9th Ward. We are commemorating the 10th anniversary of the hurricane with this production of GUTTING accompanied by community programming addressing the related issues of displacement, gentrification and racism. YOUR BLUES AIN'T SWEET LIKE MINE began its three-week run April 17 at the Two River Theater in Red Bank by focusing on the important issue of race in America. Tony Award winner Ruben Santiago-Hudson's script and direction produced a realistic and meaningful production that reinforced the concept that more than home is where the heart is - it's where you are as well - and asked many poignant questions whose answers appear at different points in the performance.
