Long Island Music Students Receive Opportunity To Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts

Five Long Island musicians have received the opportunity to both study and perform at the Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts, as part a program that was developed by the Usdan Center.

Music Director Alan Gilbert will launch the New York Philharmonic's 2014-15 subscription season with the U.S. Premiere of Unsuk Chin's Clarinet Concerto -- a New York Philharmonic co-commission with the Gothenburg Symphony, WDR Symphony, Philharmonia, and Barcelona Symphony orchestras -- performed by Kari Kriikku in his Philharmonic subscription debut, as well as Mahler's Symphony No. 1, Tuesday, September 23, 2014, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, September 26 at 11:00 a.m.; Saturday, September 27 at 8:00 p.m.; and Tuesday, September 30 at 7:30 p.m.

Boston Philharmonic Orchestra Announces 2014-2015 Season

Billy Childs to Open Segerstrom Center's 2014-15 Jazz Season, 10/17

When composer/arranger/pianist Billy Childs was introduced to the music of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame singer-songwriter Laura Nyro at the age of 11, he was left with a powerful and lasting impression of Nyro's unique blend of Broadway-inspired melodies, jazz improvisations and socially conscious lyrics. Childs returned to that early experience for his latest project, creating and orchestrating his newest album, Map to the Treasure: Reimagining Laura Nyro. Orange County jazz fans will have the opportunity to hear Childs' loving homage to the late great Nyro at Segerstrom Center for the Arts on Friday, October 17 at 8 p.m. in the Rene?e and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall.

THE ART OF THE SCORE: Film Week at the Philharmonic to Run 9/16-20

The New York Philharmonic will present the second season of THE ART OF THE SCORE: Film Week at the Philharmonic September 16-20, 2014, offering two concert programs of film music - La Dolce Vita: The Music of Italian Cinema and Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times: The Tramp at 100 - that highlight some of the genre's most distinctive uses of music. Music Director Alan Gilbert opens the New York Philharmonic's 2014-15 season on September 16 with the Opening Gala Concert, La Dolce Vita: The Music of Italian Cinema, with special guest Martin Scorsese, Oscar-winning director and film preservation proponent, who will deliver welcoming and introductory remarks. Award-winning actor, Philharmonic Board Member, and Philharmonic Radio Host Alec Baldwin returns as Artistic Advisor of THE ART OF THE SCORE.

MacArthur Fellows Chris Thile & Edgar Meyer to Play Meany Hall this Fall

Mandolinist/composer Chris Thile, of Punch Brothers, and bassist/composer Edgar Meyer will team up again in Fall 2014. These two MacArthur Fellows will cross traditional boundaries in a diverse program of largely original music. The duo has collaborated on several critically acclaimed projects, including the Grammy-winning Goat Rodeo Sessions, a 2008 recording of original compositions (Nonesuch Records) and, most recently, Chris Thile's 2013 solo recording, Bach: Sonatas and Partitas, Vol. 1, produced by Meyer. Their new album, Bass & Mandolin, will be released by Nonesuch on September 9, just prior to the launch of the duo's North American tour.

Announcing CCM's 2014-15 Concert Series

The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) has announced initial details on its 2014-15 Concert Series. Encompassing over 50 different concerts, this series begins with a performance by the internationally acclaimed Ariel Quartet with legendary guest artist Menahem Pressler on Sept. 9, 2014, and concludes with a number of performances by CCM's Preparatory Department running May 1 - 9, 2015.

Lincoln Center Extends Contract of Music Director Louis Langrée Through the 2017 Season

Jane Moss, Ehrenkranz Artistic Director of Lincoln Center and the Mostly Mozart Festival, announced today that Lincoln Center has extended the contract for Louis Langree, the Renee and Robert Belfer Music Director of the Mostly Mozart Festival and Orchestra through 2017. Maestro Langree made his Mostly Mozart Festival debut with the Festival Orchestra in 1998, and was named Music Director in 2002. The artistic partnership between Langree and the musicians of the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra has been an exceptionally inspired and 2017 will mark his 15th year as Music Director of the ensemble and the Festival. Under his musical leadership, the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra's stature and recognition as an outstanding ensemble has received extensive critical acclaim, and the orchestra's concerts are an annual highlight for summertime classical music lovers in New York City. In addition to its focus on the classical repertoire, concerts by the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra now regularly feature works from musical periods following Mozart including the 20th century and beyond.

On Tuesday, September 23 at 8:00PM at Alice Tully Hall, the American Classical Orchestra presents its opening night concert of its 30th Anniversary season with music that includes Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto with violin soloist Krista Bennion Feeney; Beethoven Symphony No. 8 and Mozart Symphony No. 35 'Haffner'.
