Review - The Merchant of Venice: Regretfully Timely
by Ben Peltz - Mar 8, 2011

With celebrity anti-Semitism once again making headlines very shortly after The Public Theater's production of Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice ended its Broadway run, it almost seems a well-timed retaliation that Theatre for a New Audience's excellent mounting make a return visit to Gotham.

by Nicole Rosky - Mar 4, 2011

'The Merchant of Venice' from the acclaimed Theatre for a New Audience, stars Oscar winner F. Murray Abraham ('Amadeus,' 1984) in his riveting portrayal of Shylock, and directed by Darko Tresnjak (former Artistic Director, Old Globe). The play has been arousing for centuries with raucous and gentle comedy, tender poetry, and its struggle with mercy and justice. In this riveting update, religion, race and sexuality collide with love, family and justice and the currency of society and humanity has never been so changeable.

Review - Orlando: She Enjoyed Being A Boy
by Ben Peltz - Sep 25, 2010

While Sarah Ruhl and director Rebecca Taichman haven't exactly made children's theatre out of Virginia Woolf's transgendering 1928 novel, Orlando (unless you approve of full adult nudity in your kiddie matinees), there are generous doses of playful whimsy in this well-mounted CSC production; though the playwright's approach seems to dilute the material's effectiveness a bit.
