AFI and TV Land announced today that Clint Eastwood, Helen Mirren, Sidney Poitier, Mike Nichols, Matthew Broderick and Rita Moreno are among the luminaries in film who will pay tribute to Morgan Freeman, the 39th AFI Life Achievement Award recipient.
The 2011 Tony Award nominees were announced live from the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts in New York City on Tuesday, May 3, 2011. The next day, proud nominees gathered at the Millenium Hotel in Times Square to celebrate and meet the press. With music and lyrics by Jay Kuo (Insignificant Others, Worlds Apart) and book by Kuo and Thione, 'Allegiance' is a family drama that explores love, loss and heroism during the Japanese American confinement in 1942 of approximately 110,000 Japanese nationals and Japanese Americans in no more than 465 cramped barracks in Wyoming. The musical received a staged reading in February of last year, and eyes heading to Broadway in the near future. The cast will feature Lea Salonga and George Takei, reprising the roles that they created. Also reportedly joining the cast are Paolo Montalban and Alan Ariano.
The legendary Broadway star, actress/singer Betty Buckley will offer a special Summer Workshop of Song Interpretation and Scene Study beginning June 13. The Fort Worth native will assist aspiring artists, educators and experienced performers in the craft of singing, acting and storytelling.
'The Butterfly Conservatory: Tropical Butterflies Alive in Winter,' an annual favorite visited by millions of children and adults, returns to the American Museum of Natural History on October 16. Celebrating its thirteenth year at the Museum, this highly popular winter attraction transforms the iciest day into a summer escape, inviting visitors to mingle with up to 500 fluttering, iridescent butterflies among blooming tropical flowers and lush green vegetation in 80-degree temperatures. The Butterfly Conservatory is on view through May 30, 2011.
Executive Producer Lou Spisto today announced the return of actor, playwright and Steinway concert artist Hershey Felder in a trio of his critically-acclaimed solo shows. Hershey Felder as George Gershwin Alone delighted San Diego audiences in 2006 and 2008 and due to popular demand will be revived for 13 performances from July 1 - 10. Felder will lead audiences on a musical journey through a century of American music in Hershey Felder in Concert: The Great American Songbook Sing-Along from July 11 - 17. The latest addition to Felder's ambitious 'Composers Sonata,' Hershey Felder in Maestro: The Art of Leonard Bernstein, will receive its Globe debut from July 22 - Aug. 28. Previews run July 22 - July 28. Opening night is July 29. Both George Gershwin Alone and Maestro are directed by Joel Zwick. All three events will run in the Old Globe Theatre, part of the Globe's Conrad Prebys Theatre Center. Kristin Chenoweth is one of Broadway's biggest standout exports since Barbra Streisand. It used to be that Broadway actors would go to LA for pilot season and very often come home empty handed.
