TheatreWorks Silicon Valley continues its 2015/2016 season with the Northern California Premiere of TOKYO FISH STORY by Kimber Lee. Generations, genders, and traditions collide in this comic drama, as a revered Sushi Master struggles to preserve ancient artistry in a society obsessed with change. This production will be directed by Kristen Brandt with performances tonight, March 9, through April 3 (press opening: March 12) at the Lucie Stern Theatre, 1305 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto. Merrimack Repertory Theatre is unveiling a newly-expanded Young Company, which will encourage area students' participation in the theatre and connect them with leading theatre professionals from around the country. The new program begins with a two-week intensive summer program and continues throughout the year with access to MRT's staff and visiting artists. The Young Company is the first initiative of the recently formed MRT Education Department, led by local theatre educator Amy Menkin.

Nancy Manocherian's the cell presents the World Premiere of SHOES & BAGGAGE, a one-woman musical about the "high of the buy." Written and performed by Broadway veteran Cheryl Stern (La Cage Aux Folles, The Women), it is directed by Joe Barros with music by Emmy Award-winning composer Tom Kochan. Previews begin May 5 at the cell with opening slated for Thursday, May 12. NOTE: this limited engagement is produced on an Off-Broadway contract.

There is magic in midtown. Memphis is stagestruck -- moreso than ever, and with a surplus of talent! (Investors call the new vitality and nightlife 'gentrification,' I call it a renaissance because the arts are thriving all around us.) In one square mile, there are more shows each weekend than an avid theatre goer has time to enjoy. This month, yet another tantalizing choice appeared on the calendar. Cloud9 Theatre Company just closed its inaugural show at the Evergreen Theatre. (I was sorry I couldn't get there opening night.) Based on what I saw, we have another local gem. What fun to live and work in the midst of so much creative energy!

The American Theatre Wing announced today that the 2016 Jonathan Larson Grants recipients are Cesar Alvarez (book, music and lyrics), Nikko Benson (music and lyrics), Carson Kreitzer (book and lyrics), and Sam Salmond (book, music, and lyrics). Four prestigious grants of $10,000 each, totaling $40,000, will be presented on Monday, March 21, 2016 at a private event at the WNYC Greene Space. The event will feature special performances of the recipients' work.

Theatreworks USA will continue its 2016 weekend family performance series this Saturday, February 27th, with Charlotte's Web, a play by Joseph Robinette based on the Newbery Medal-winning book by E.B. White (Stuart Little, Trumpet of the Swan) with an incidental music score by Jeffrey Lunden (winner of the Lortel Award, Rodgers Award, and Jonathan Larson Award, and composer of Theatreworks USA productions of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Little Prince, and The Great Railroad Race). This 60-minute play is recommended for audiences age 5 and up.
