BROADWAY WEEK To Run 1/24-2/10

The Broadway League and NYC & Company, New York City's official tourism, marketing and partnership organization, today announced winter marketing programs - including the first ever Broadway Week featuring 2-for-1 tickets to participating shows from January 24 - February 10, 2011 - to encourage residents and visitors to experience the best New York City has to offer this winter.

Arena Stage Holds National Convening Focused on New Play Development

Now in its second year, the American Voices New Play Institute at Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater will hold a four-day convening bringing together more than 100 theater practitioners from across the country to further the dialogue around new play development.

Playwrights Horizons (Tim Sanford, Artistic Director; Leslie Marcus, Managing Director) presents the World Premiere of A SMALL FIRE, a new play by Obie Award winner Adam Bock (The Drunken City at PH, The Receptionist, The Thugs, Swimming in the Shallows). Directed by Trip Cullman (Adam Bock's The Drunken City at PH and Swimming in the Shallows, plus Bachelorette, Some Men, The Last Sunday in June, the upcoming Edgewise), the production opens January 6 at 7PM. The limited engagement will play through Sunday, January 23 at Playwrights Horizons' Mainstage Theater (416 West 42nd Street).

Nominees For the 2010 Wasserstein Prize for Playwriting to be Reconsidered

The Wendy Wasserstein Prize committee and administrator, the Theatre Development Fund, caused quite the stir this month when reports flourished that the $25,000 prize would not be awarded to an emerging female playwright this year. Out of 19 nominees, the panel stated that none could be deemed 'truly outstanding.'

No Wasserstein Prize in 2010 Yields Growing Viral Response

Playwright Michael Lew, on the official YOUNGBLOG blog (the group blog for the Ensemble Studio Theatre of New York's young playwrights) has written an open letter to TDF regarding the news that no Wasserstein Prize will be awarded in 2010 due to the panel not finding a play that they deemed to be 'truly outstanding'.

John Lindsay Receives Plaque for Broadway Theatre Contributions

Parks & Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe and Cultural Affairs Commissioner Kate Levin today unveiled a new plaque at the TKTS booth in Duffy Square, honoring the site's history and recent restorations, while also lauding the efforts of Mayor John V. Lindsay. Mayor Lindsay was a passionate supporter of the Broadway Theatre and was instrumental in the creation of the original TKTS booth with the Theatre Development Fund in 1973, making Duffy Square ever since a destination point for those in search of reduced-price theater tickets. Also in attendance at today's unveiling were State Assembly Member Richard Gottfried; Broadway producer Hal Prince, who is Chair of the Theatre Industry Committee to Honor John Lindsay; as well as leaders of the Times Square Alliance, Theatre Development Fund, Broadway League, Broadway Association, and members of Mayor Lindsay's family.
