As part of Artists at Play's mission statement to present stories of underrepresented communities, they will be developing and showcasing two new works by L.A.-based playwrights to add to the growing support of new plays by L.A.'s theatre community.
Renaissance Theaterworks (RTW) wraps up its 20th season with THE ROAD TO MECCA by Athol Fugard. Suzan Fete will be directing one of Fugard's most lyrical plays, featuring Linda Stephens, Bri Sudia and Jonathan Gillard Daly. Running April 5 - 28, 2013, at the Studio Theatre, 158 N. Broadway. From the iconic songbook of Johnny Cash comes this unique musical about love and faith, struggle and success, rowdiness and redemption, and home and family. More than two dozen classic hits - including 'I Walk the Line,' 'A Boy Named Sue,' 'Folsom Prison Blues,' and the title tune - performed by a multi-talented cast, paint a musical portrait of The Man in Black that promises to be a foot-stompin', crowd-pleasin' salute to a uniquely American legend! Richard Maltby, Jr. created the piece and will also direct The Rep's production. It was originally conceived by William Meade with orchestrations by Steven Bishop and Jeff Lisenby. Malty is re-conceiving his Johnny Cash tribute specifically for a five-member ensemble for The Rep's Stackner Cabaret. The cast features Trenna Barnes, Eddie Clendening, Jason Edwards, David Miles Keenan and Mark W. Winchester, who are all making their Rep debuts. Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash runs in the Stackner Cabaret from tonight, March 1 - May 5, and opens Sunday, March 3.

Renaissance Theaterworks (RTW) is hosting a Dress for Success clothing drive during the run of their show EDUCATING RITA, a comedy by Willy Russell. Russell's play triggered a conversation that ultimately brought RTW, the YWCA and the W Girls together. The drive will run along with the production, January 18 - February 10, 2013, at the Studio Theatre, Broadway Theatre Center (Milwaukee).

TheaterWorks' production will be a revised version of BSC's production starring stage, film and television actress Debra Jo Rupp (Kitty Forman on That 70's Show). Dr. Ruth, All the Way will run May 31st through July 7th, 2013.
