The 12th annual performances of Too Hot to Handel: The Jazz-Gospel Messiah take place at the Auditorium Theatre on January 14 and 15, the weekend before Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Renowned soloists Rodrick Dixon, Alfreda Burke, and Karen Marie Richardson join legendary pianist Alvin Waddles in the celebratory production, which features a choir of over 100 choir members and musicians. Too Hot to Handel is based on George Frideric Handel's Messiah, and pairs Handel's traditional classical score with jazz, gospel, and blues.
Auditorium Theatre Launches ADMIT ONE Program

The Auditorium Theatre launches ADMIT ONE, a new initiative that provides community groups with the opportunity to experience music and dance at the National Historic Landmark. The ADMIT ONE program covers tickets, as well as transportation costs to and from the theatre, to underserved Chicagoland after-school and neighborhood groups and social service agencies. In addition, some groups will experience pre-show engagements and in-community residencies organized by the Auditorium Theatre's Creative Engagement Department.

The Auditorium Theatre and the Chinese Fine Arts Society present Jackie Chan's Long Yun Kung Fu Troupe from Beijing on February 4, 2017, as part of Chicago's Chinese New Year celebration presented in partnership with Choose Chicago. The 11 members of the Long Yun troupe - hand-picked by famous martial artist, actor, and film director Jackie Chan - effortlessly combine elements of traditional kung fu, ballet, and modern dance in the mesmerizing program 11 Warriors. A pre-sale to Auditorium Theatre patrons and Chinese Fine Arts Society members runs from October 18 to October 23. Tickets go on sale to the general public on Monday, October 24, at 10AM.
Dance Theatre of Harlem Returns to the Auditorium Theatre

The acclaimed Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH) gives three performances at the Auditorium Theatre on November 18, 19, and 20 with a program that includes System, a major new work by choreographer Francesca Harper. The work is supported by the New England Foundation for the Arts, and is inspired by the current social, political, and economic climate in the United States.System was choreographed in collaboration with Dance Theatre of Harlem dancers who used their own experiences as people of color for inspiration. DTH Artistic Director Virginia Johnson told the Washington Post that System "addresses social justice issues in the Black Lives Matter era" and is "a very contemporary piece, but also very beautiful and uplifting.' A live string quartet performs composer John Adams' original music for the piece.

Brighton Thomas is the 2016 winner of the Great American Songbook Youth Ambassador Award. The 17-year-old is from Burbank, CA. During the final concert on July 23, 2016, she sang American standards: "It Had to be You" and "Happy Days Are Here Again.'

The Efroymson Family Fund, a fund of Central Indiana Community Foundation (CICF) has awarded a grant of $75,000 to the Great American Songbook Foundation to sponsor its signature educational program, The Songbook Academy.
