This is the first time that THE TIDINGS BROUGHT TO MARY has been seen in NYC since the Broadway premiere in 1922 / 1923. Set in 15th century France, Paul Claudel's THE TIDINGS BROUGHT TO MARY is a mystery play that follows the tale of two sisters, one dedicated to the spirit and the other to the flesh.
The Irish Repertory Theatre (132 West 22nd Street) is hosting a NEW WORKS READING SERIES to support new plays and emerging playwrights. As part of its mission statement, The Irish Repertory Theatre 'encourages the development of new works focusing on the Irish and Irish American experience, as well as a range of other cultures.' The 2008 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize has been awarded to Judith Thompson for her critically acclaimed play Palace of the End, marking the first time a Canadian writer has received the prestigious playwriting award's highest honor. Thompson received $20,000 and a signed and numbered print by artist Willem de Kooning at a special 30th Anniversary ceremony on Monday, March 10th at the Alley Theatre in Houston, Texas where Ms. Blackburn first became involved in theatre.
Nicolas Kent, the Tricycle Theatre's Artistic Director, will direct Dearbhla Molloy as Sister Aloysius, Nikki Amuka-Bird as Mrs Muller, Padraic Delaney as Father Flynn and Marcella Plunkett as Sister James in the British premiere of John Patrick Shanley's Doubt. Doubt will run from November 22 - January 12, 2008.
