On October 15, 2010, The New York Pops orchestra - famous for presenting popular music with a symphony orchestra of the highest quality - will launch its 28th season; a Carnegie Hall series celebrating the stylistic diversity of some of popular music's greatest icons. Music Director Steven Reineke leads the orchestra in this electrifying season, which includes chart-topping pop hits, a tribute to the greatest living lyricist and composer of American musical theater, holiday favorites, sizzling Latin flair, and an evening of songbook classics associated with a legendary American icon. Legendary composer and lyricist Johnny Mercer's extensive musical accomplishments will be celebrated by the New York Pops, along with some very special guests, in a concert held on November 20 at Carnegie Hall. According to the program details on the Carnegie Hall website, scheduled to appear alongside the New York Pops are Tony Award nominee Anne Hampton Callaway, James T. Lane, N'Kenge, and the Camp Broadway Kids. Steven Reineke is the music director and conductor.
The New York Philharmonic will present SONDHEIM: The Birthday Concert on March 15 and Tuesday, March 16, 2010, at 7:30 p.m. This celebration of the 80th birthday of the great Broadway and film composer/lyricist will include his most enduring orchestral music and songs - performed, in some cases, by the stars of the original Broadway cast productions - in addition to rarely-heard material. Joining the celebration will be (in alphabetical order) Michael Cerveris, Victoria Clark, Jason Danieley, Nathan Gunn, George Hearn, Patti LuPone, Marin Mazzie, Audra McDonald, Donna Murphy, Mandy Patinkin, Bernadette Peters, and others to be announced, including surprise guests.
