BWW Reviews: ALMOST HEAVEN at Roxy Regional Theatre

Five exceptional young talents take on the songbook of one of America's favorite pop/folk/country music performers in Roxy Regional Theatre's production of Almost Heaven: Songs of John Denver, now onstage in Clarksville through July 2. Directed with obvious affection and respect for the musical revue's hero by Tom Thayer, it's as if the pop music soundtrack of the early- to mid-1970s (with attention paid to Denver's later efforts as well) has come to life in the just under two hours of music.

STAGE TUBE: Roxy Regional Theatre Previews ALMOST HEAVEN

During the June 7th, 2011 Comedy on the Cumberland show, the Roxy Regional Theatre gave a sneak peek of their upcoming show Almost Heaven: The Songs of John Denver. Weaving together the songs of John Denver with interviews, fan letters and passages from his autobiography, Almost Heaven was originally conceived by Harold Thau with orchestrations, vocal arrangements and music supervision by Jeff Waxman. Directed by Tom Thayer, the musical revue features Keith Panzarella, Erica Haines Cantrell, Bryan Benware, Kendall Anne Thompson and Ryan Bowie, with David Lovell on guitar, Tom Thayer on piano and Thad Wallus on bass.

BWW Reviews: THE CIVIL WAR at Clarksville's Roxy Regional Theatre

Like Rodney Dangerfield before him, Frank Wildhorn gets no respect in musical theater circles. Despite the relative success of his first widely known work for musical theater - Jekyll and Hyde, a popular if not exactly critical success - Wildhorn's subsequent musicals have been met with lukewarm praise, at best, including his just-closed Wonderland, which got some of the season's most scathing reviews on Broadway. The Roxy Regional Theatre, never a company to let reviews influence their show selection, brings Wildhorn's Tony Award-nominated The Civil War to the stage in Clarksville, in a largely successful and watchable production featuring a young, committed and capable cast.

BWW Interviews: Ryan Bowie, A Life in the Theater

Ryan Bowie, now firmly ensconced in his new professional life in Clarksville, Tennessee, made his way southward from New York City to do one show and, thanks to fate, ended up deciding he'd found his way home. Now onstage in the Roxy Regional Theatre's production of The Civil War, the Frank Wildhorn musical that continues through May 21, he won acclaim (both critical and otherwise) at The Baker in the Roxy's 2010 revival of Into The Woods (ranked among the year's best performances by First Night and BroadwayWorld.com readers).

BWW Reviews: AIN'T MISBEHAVIN' at Clarksville's Roxy Regional Theatre

Where you could possibly find five more charming and engaging performers than the cast assembled by director/choreographer Ryan Bowie for his winning revival of Ain't Misbehavin' - now onstage through March 5 at Clarksville's Roxy Regional Theatre - is beyond me! These five dazzling entertainers deliver a musical jolt of electricity that completely enlivens the dark, frigid days of winter, taking audiences on a musical and historical journey through the Harlem Renaissance via the life and career of Mrs. Waller's bouncing 250-pound baby boy, Thomas - better known as 'Fats.'
