A PICASSO Makes Its Regional Premiere Running 1/24-2/22

San Jose Repertory Theatre roars into the new year with the Regional Premiere of A Picasso (Barrymore Award for Best New Play), a provocative play by one of America's most widely produced playwrights, Jeffrey Hatcher. Jonathan Moscone, Artistic Director of California Shakespeare Theater, directs this smart and sexy exploration of art, politics and censorship. A Picasso runs January 24 - February 22, 2009 at San Jose Repertory Theatre, 101 Paseo de San Antonio in downtown San Jose. Preview performances are January 24, 25, 28, and 29. Press Opening is Friday, January 30 at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are available at the San Jose Rep Box Office at 101 Paseo de San Antonio or can be purchased online at www.SJRep.com or by calling (408) 367-7255. 'San Jose Rep has had a long and wonderful relationship with playwright Jeffrey Hatcher, so we're very pleased to be presenting the Bay Area premiere of this very literate, smart and funny play,' comments Artistic Director Rick Lombardo. 'Picasso was a fascinating figure both as an artist and a citizen, and it's a delight to see him square off in Hatcher's play with a representative of the Third Reich - and an art critic to top it off.'

The Artistic Home's Season Continues With MODIGLIANI 2/8-22

The Artistic Home's 2008/2009 season continues its exploration of the artist in society with the rarely produced Modigliani by Dennis McIntyre. The second production in Artistic Home's Mainstage series, Modigliani will be directed by Artistic Director Kathy Scambiatterra and will feature Artistic Home co-founder and Associate Director, John Mossman in the title role. Modigliani opens February 8th and runs through March 22, 2009 at The Artistic Home's new residence, 3914 N. Clark Street in Chicago. Performances are Thursdays at 7:30pm, Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00pm, and Sundays at 3:00pm. Previews are February 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th at 8:00pm. Single tickets are $25 on Fridays and Saturdays and $23 on Thursdays and Sundays. Preview tickets are $15. Student/Senior tickets are available for $20 on Thursdays and Sundays only, starting February 12th. For tickets, call 1-866-811-4111 or visit www.theartistichome.org. Set in the Left Bank of Paris, 1916, Modigliani chronicles a critical 72 hour period for an artistic genius on the verge of fame. A rival of Picasso, painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani turned Montparnasse upside down with his legendary excesses and talent, while spawning a circle of friends and lovers that worshipped him like a rock star. The Parisian posterchild for the free-wheeling lifestyle of 1900s Bohemia, Modi - as he was known to his friends - filled his days with drugs, liquor, sex, art and the company of his many colorful compatriots. Yet, as he began to feel the weight of his age and the increasing pressure to produce, Modi soon came face-to-face with the limits of his own mortality and the realities of living in a world where product holds more value than process and love can't hold a candle to the prospect of fame.

The production runs February 13-March 8, 2009 at St. Bonaventure, 1625 W. Diversey Pkwy. in Chicago. In Picasso at the Lapin Agile, Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso meet at a bar in Montmartre, Paris on October 8, 1904. Both men are on the verge of an amazing idea-Einstein will publish his special theory of relativity in 1905, and Picasso will paint Les Demoiselles d'Avignon in 1907-when they find themselves at the Lapin Agile (Nimble Rabbit), where they have a lengthy debate about the value of genius and talent while interacting with a host of other characters. Directing SSP's production of Picasso at the Lapin Agile is Steven Walanka, who has directed SSP productions of Tribute, The Lion in Winter, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Days of Wine and Roses and The Caine Mutiny Court Martial. Mike Patrick is set designer, Rachel Lambert is costume designer, Stacy Raker is assistant director, SSP member Kelly Rhyne is stage manager and SSP member Jim Masini is producer.

QUIET MAN TALES Makes World Premiere at The Chicago Theatre Downstairs in March

THE QUIET MAN TALES, a riveting new play presented by Smock Alley Theater Co., in conjunction with Mavin Productions II and Pullinsi & D'Angelo Productions, will make its world premiere at The Chicago Theatre Downstairs, 175 N. State Street, previewing March 6 and opening Sunday, March 22 at 3:00 p.m. Susan Felder will direct. Adapted for the stage by Frank Mahon and Milissa Pacelli, THE QUIET MAN TALES is based on Green Rushes, the classic book of short stories by Maurice Walsh. Published in 1935, the book was the inspiration for the legendary 1952 Academy Award-winning film The Quiet Man, which was directed by John Ford and starred Maureen O'Hara and John Wayne. Set in the sweeping Irish countryside in the midst of the country's battle for freedom from England in 1921 and the years that follow, THE QUIET MAN TALES is a humorous and poignant story of the interconnected lives of the men and women who fought in the Irish War of Independence. The production features beautiful new and traditional Irish music performed by Chicago-area Irish musicians. For the first time ever, this beloved Irish story is told on stage in the rich context of Walsh's other stories, and offers plenty of laughs, plenty of drama, and plenty of action - entertainment in the grand style. Of THE QUIET MAN TALES, Maureen O'Hara says: 'A wonderful script both sensitive and honest to its time frame...You have managed to give uniqueness to the story and its characters that will make it stand on its own...I'm sure Maurice Walsh would approve of this story based on Green Rushes being scripted in such a delightful way.'
