Da Camera of Houston announces its 2019/2020 season, which features a lineup spanning a multitude of styles and genres.

South Florida JAZZ, the area's premier jazz organization, continues its 27th season of presentation, and the second season of 'South Florida JAZZ at Bailey Hall,' with the venerable JOHN SCOFIELD. The indomitable, genre-bending guitarist brings his new quartet, Combo 66, to South Florida to the delight of his legions of fans.

Richard and Karen Carpenter Performing Arts Center, located on the campus of California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), presents a treat for film and music lovers on Friday, March 15th at 8pm as renowned jazz drummer Antonio Sanchez performs his dynamic score to a screening of writer and director Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarittu's film BiRDMAN or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014).

Severely dehydrated from the oppressive heat during his travels from Mali to Uganda, Reza Khan was hospitalized after collapsing in a United Nations office. To avoid the lengthy hospitalization prescribed by doctors, he convinced them that he would recover faster if he was ensconced in a hotel room instead. During that five-day stay, he broke out his portable guitar and wrote the title track for his fifth album, “Next Train Home,” which drops April 5.  

The Robert and Margrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts, UC Davis will host jazz pianist Fred Hersch over four nights, April 10-13, 2019, in the Vanderhoef Studio Theatre. This event, entitled Fred Hersch and Friends, features Hersch in solo and duo formats with artists he has long admired.

Miller Theatre at Columbia University School of the Arts continues its 2018-19 Jazz series with Linda May Han Oh Quintet, Saturday, March 2, 2019, 8:00 p.m. at Miller Theatre (2960 Broadway at 116th Street). Tickets: $20-$35; Students with valid ID: $7-$21

The 2019 Freihofer's Saratoga Jazz Festival features an extraordinary roster of twenty-two musical groups, highlighted by the festival debut of Grammy award winning artist Norah Jones, and the return of jazz legend George Benson and festival favorite Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue. Back by popular demand is also Los Van Van 50th Anniversary, Django Festival All-Stars with Edmar Castañeda and Grace Kelly, Joshua Redman Quartet, and James Carter Organ Trio. Fifteen emerging artists making their Saratoga debuts include Kandace Springs, Donna Grantis, Joey DeFrancesco Trio, Mercy Project which features Jon Cowherd, Brian Blade, John Patitucci, and Steve Cardenas, Antonio Sanchez & Migration, and Cha Wa. The festival will also feature a record number of groups led by women artists, highlighted by Allison Miller, Veronica Swift, Ruthie Foster and Youn Sun Nah.

Nonesuch and New Amsterdam Records have joined forces to release approximately three albums per year over an initial three-year period. This partnership is the result of conversations between the two New York-based labels about their long-term shared values to support the work of several generations of American composers, with the intention of enabling those artists to realize creative ambitions that might not otherwise be achievable. The collaboration reflects the fifty-four-year-old Nonesuch's legacy and the accomplishments of the ten-year-old New Amsterdam, combining their resources in order to share newly-recorded music with a wider audience.

Town Hall announces that this year's FRIEND OF THE ARTS AWARD - it's 97th annual - will honor Multimedia Performance Artist, LAURIE ANDERSON; TheaterWorksUSA Co-Founder, CHARLES HULL; and Nonesuch Records' Long-Time President, ROBERT HURWITZ.

As a follow-up to 2017's acclaimed Ballet: The Music of Michael Gibbs, Seattle-based trumpeter Cuong Vu joins forces once again with guitar great Bill Frisell, bassist Luke Bergman and drummer Ted Poor on the boundary-pushing quartet outing for RareNoiseRecords, Change in the Air. With all the members of the quartet contributing compositions, this one finds the four participants on equal footing on ten adventurous originals. From Poor's dreamy, noirish opener 'All That's Left of Me Is You' and his lonesome echo-laden waltz 'Alive' to Bergman's dynamic 'Must Concentrate,' Frisell's delicate 'Look, Listen' and his beguiling heartland melody 'Long Ago' and Vu's angular 'Round and Round' and his edgy and electrified 'March of the Owl and the Bat,' these four stellar musicians are truly on one accord and dealing with a rare level of nuance and depth of communication on Change in the Air.

Hide the Moon and the Stars, the sublime new duo recording from pianist Bryn Roberts and guitarist Lage Lund, isn't the kind of jazz album that needs to be read about before it can be understood and enjoyed. It didn't premiere as part of a postmodern opera or multimedia performance; there isn't an overarching concept gleaned from abstract expressionism or the poetry of Rumi. Rather, with its casually stunning interplay and lyrical original music, it's “simply a good showcase for these two particular players, these two voices, these two musical personalities who've been friends for over a dozen years,” Roberts says.

Renowned singer-songwriter Jesse Harris has announced release plans for his latest album, Aquarelle, to be released on Secret Sun Records on September 7th. From the album, recorded in Lisbon, Portugal last year, comes the first song, “Out Of Time”, accompanied by a video shot by director dAVID sTRANGE.
