Everyone knows what happened to Marie Antoinette… Spoiler Alert: It's not pretty. It also makes intriguing theatre in David Adjmi's MARIE ANTOINETTE, which presents the doomed French queen filtered through the lens of the spoiled entitled rich girl, much like a Nicole Ritchie or a Paris Hilton. His Marie speaks in modern slang… and is pretty foul mouthed as well. Adjmi tells the story of Marie's fall year by year, concluding with her execution. While the script is remarkably faithful to the facts, it takes wild liberties with everything else.

Everyone loves a hot mess. Kim Kardashian, Paris Hilton, Honey Boo Boo, Heidi and Spencer Pratt, The Real Housewives of [insert city here]. We watch them out of admiration, out of fascination and - let's be honest - out of a hidden desire to see them fall from grace. The eighteenth-century version of the reality star was Marie Antoinette. Adore her, admonish her, despise her or behead her, the one thing you couldn't do was ignore her. In David Adjmi's hot new play, the queen that everyone has an opinion of is finally given her own voice, and you might be surprised by what comes out. At times, it can be hard to imagine that there was ever a period in history when society was as celebrity-obsessed as we are right now. With the internet, social media, Twitter, 24-hour cable news and everything else, information about the rich and famous is everywhere, all the time. It seems impossible to avoid and seems that the public's appetite for it is insatiable. On the other hand, David Adjmi's play Marie Antoinette, now playing at the Gamm Theatre, casts the famous French queen in much the same kind of world. And while the uneven play doesn't offer much that's new or original, it does provide another lens through which we can view and examine our own society and it's problems.

THE METROMANIACS might not be Moliere but it is a delicious romp thanks to the expert direction by Shakespeare Theatre Company artistic director Michael Kahn and playwright David Ives. Ives new comedy in English is taken from a rediscovered farce, LA METROMANIE by Alexis Piron. If the winter weather has got you down, I urge you to get tickets to THE METROMANIACS for disguises and ruses and verse-ical abuses. Kahn and Ives third collaboration as director and playwright/adapter - after THE LIAR and THE HEIR APPARENT - have struck gold again finding high art in the silliness of lesser known French comedies.
