BWW Review: Seattle Rep's JINKX MONSOON & MAJOR SCALES: UNWRAPPED a Smashed Hit
by Amelia Reynolds - Dec 8, 2015

Cynical tributes to the holidays can easily fall into cliches, feeling as stale as the fruitcake they mock, but Seattle Repertory Theatre's Jinkx Monsoon & Major Scales: Unwrapped was a bejeweled middle finger to Christmas that, ultimately, was touchingly sincere. Back by popular demand, the drag duo Jinkx Monsoon (Jerrick Hoffer) and Major Scales (Richard Andriessen) ask you to sit back, kick back your stilettos, and enjoy a swig (or ten) of brandy from the turkey baster.

Debut Short Story Collection STRANGE MATTERS by Bret Allen is Released
by Christina Mancuso - Nov 23, 2015

With a print edition just being released, fantasy fans can get their hands on both printed and ebook versions of this fresh short story collection. The debut ebook Strange Matters by Bret Allen is the perfect way to jump into new fantastic worlds and stories. Ranging from urban tales of Ethiopian hyenas in London to classic sword-and-magic wielding warriors, this 20-strong collection of tales and poems explores the uniting factor between all sub-genres of fantasy: the strange. From ancient British gods in the style of Neil Gaiman to a dream diary that becomes far too real, 'Strange Matters' looks for new angles and twists for fantasy while retaining a sense of wonder and deep-seated truth. With stories ranging from two pages to two hundred, readers can dip in for a quick read on the Tube (try 'They Found Him Weeping' set on the London Underground), or get their teeth into a novella-length adventure (such as 'The Firebird,' a Slavic fairy tale for a new generation). This book includes twenty pieces of poetry and fiction (some with mature themes), including among others: Wordsmith Kate's night is interrupted by meeting a mute, half-naked Ethiopian boy, which would be fine if he wasn't being hunted through the streets of London by hyenas. Torc When a group of bikers get lost in a forest, they find that they are not alone. The Firebird Ekaterina wants to be taken seriously by the men of her village, so she sets out to hunt the greatest prey of all... the legendary Firebird. Arcturus A nameless criminal explores his capacity for magic- and empathy- when he's forced to make unusual acquaintances to escape justice. It Wants To Eat Me The diary entries of a teenage girl who finds an unusual and unwelcome intruder in her dreams. British Gods Two strange figures watch the violence of the London riots unfold and do what they can to help, as only forgotten gods can. Nine Having just died, Andy's not pleased to find himself in the ancient Egyptian afterlife, where the goddess Bastet wants a word with him. 'Strange Matters' is a journey through many facets of fantasy, all united by a fresh, modern eye for incisive storytelling and magical realism. Bret Allen is a writer from Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. He has written for video games and his blog. Strange Matters represents a first huge milestone in his fiction writing career. The story 'It Wants To Eat Me' is featured in the Smashwords Writer's Forum Anthology 2015. Bret has won a txtlit competition for extremely short fiction in the space of one SMS, plus has written for computer games. He also features on the Don't Lose Your Headline comedy podcast. Reviews of 'The Firebird': - A classic tale of folklore and fable rolled into one, easily devoured in a single sitting! - After the first few paragraphs you'll be truly hooked! A welcome change from the humdrum vampire and '50 shades' knock offs - a very refreshing change! Reviews of 'Strange Matters': - These are fantastic, well crafted stories, and they will stay with you a long time after you've finished. - This is a fantastic collection of short stories and poetry, a must read for fantasy fans. Neil Gaiman's tweet on 'British Gods': 'I think it's great! Makes me homesick for the UK, in odd ways.' 'Strange Matters' is available as an ebook on Amazon, Smashwords, Google Play, iTunes, Barnes and Noble and Kobo for £1.99. The print edition costs £8.99 on Amazon, Barnes and Noble and more. A free sample- 'The Firebird and Other Extracts from Strange Matters' is available in all formats except Amazon (coming soon). Find links to all the major ebook retailers at http://bit.ly/1HWsgsD and www.bretallen.info. A quote from Bret Allen: 'What is there to say? I'm Bret Allen and I'm a writer! 'In fiction, my favourite genres are fantasy, scifi and supernatural. There's something fascinating about the comparisons drawn between real life and the fantastic; in a contrary fashion, they can be more profound than those drawn by real-life stories. 'Most of all, I try to put a new spin on those genres, which in many cases have become stiff, old shambling corpses. Stitch on a smart new head, put a little truth in the heart, run a 500 megawatt current of strangeness through them and suddenly... they live again!' Award-Winning Author Geoff Notkin Releases Third Book
by Christina Mancuso - Oct 29, 2015

Before he was known to millions of viewers worldwide as an Emmy Award-winning television personality and half of the globe-trotting, space rock-hunting duo 'Meteorite Men,' Geoffrey Notkin was a cartoonist. A comic book fan from childhood, Notkin pursued his passion professionally as a young adult in New York in the 1980s. After graduating from the acclaimed School of Visual Arts, he remained in Manhattan and found employment in the global epicenter of the comics and publishing industries. 'My Incredibly Strange and Amazing Real-Life Adventures in the World of Comic Books' is a sometimes hilarious, sometimes profound memoir of Notkin's life and times during the Bronze Age of Comics. Through an astonishing and almost unbelievable series of coincidences, he befriended and worked with some of the greatest comic book creators of the last hundred years, including Neil Gaiman, Will Eisner, Harvey Kurtzman, Art Spiegelman, and many others. Notkin's first job after college was at RAW Books and Graphics, where he worked for owners Art Spiegelman and Françoise Mouly. He was a production assistant on the graphic novel 'Maus,' for which Spiegelman won the Pulitzer Prize. Spiegelman was also the co-creator of the Garbage Pail Kids trading cards, and based the now iconic 'Deaf Geoff' card on Geoff Notkin himself. 'From childhood, during my New York City publishing career, and all the way through 'Meteorite Men,' comics have been a driving force in my life,' said Notkin. 'The friendships I formed with these Titans of the comic book world had a profound effect on my professional life, and the episodes recounted in this new book number among my strangest and most amusing adventures.' An initial print run of 'My Incredibly Strange and Amazing Real-Life Adventures in the World of Comic Books' will consist of just 250 personally signed and numbered copies, with an exclusive tipped-in color panel. This special limited handcrafted edition will be published on October 31, 2015. Orders are now being accepted at http://www.geoffnotkin.com/books or by calling 888 SKY ROXX. The #1/250 signed copy of the book will be up for auction on eBay. Visit http://stores.ebay.com/Aerolite-Meteorites on October 31, when the auction will begin. In addition, a launch party for the book will be held at TusCon 42, Tucson's annual sci-fi, fantasy and horror convention, where Notkin is appearing as a Special Guest. The book launch will be held during an autograph session on Saturday, October 31, at 4 pm local time, at Hotel Tucson City Center, 475 N Granada Avenue, Tucson, Arizona. Just released on YouTube is a short video featuring Geoff Notkin entitled, 'The Making of My Incredibly Strange Life.' See the video now at: https://youtu.be/O_qifuZ0LaQ Advance copies of the book are available for reviewers and media outlets. Media wishing to request a review copy, schedule an interview with Geoff Notkin, or book him as a speaker, are asked to contact Becca Gladden, Director of Public Relations, at pr@aerolite.org or (623) 210-6554. Source: Aerolite Meteorite Public Relations About Geoffrey Notkin: A television host, professional meteorite hunter, science writer, and photographer, Notkin is President of Aerolite Meteorites, Inc., the world's largest commercial meteorite company. He starred for three seasons on Science Channel's award-winning TV show 'Meteorite Men' and hosted the Emmy-winning educational TV series 'STEM Journals' for Cox Media. He has also made documentaries for National Geographic, Discovery, PBS, BBC, History Channel, A&E, and Travel Channel. Notkin has written more than 150 published articles on meteoritics, paleontology, adventure travel, history, and the arts, and is the author of three books. The minor planet 132904, discovered at Mount Palomar, was named 'Notkin' and approved by the Minor Planet Center in recognition of Geoff's contributions to science and education.
