BWW Interviews: Iconic Singer ENGELBERT HUMPERDINCK To Appear at the Saban, 2/20

Remember when English-born pop singer Engelbert Humperdinck (born Arnold George Dorsey) became a huge international sensation in the 60s after his number one hit 'Release Me' followed by 'There Goes My Everything'? His handsome looks and laid-back style made him ever so popular with female fans. Well, he's still singing with a new album of duets called ENGELBERT CALLING, and he will be appearing for one night only at the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills February 20. With so many duet albums on the market today, why did you decide to do one as well?

BWW Reviews: IN THE MOOD Brings the Boogie to New Orleans

Alright, so unlike most humans who are currently in their mid-twenties, I grew up listening to the tunes of artists like Bing Crosby (not just at Christmastime), Judy Garland, Perry Como, Glenn Miller, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, The Andrews Sisters… I could go on forever. I listened to it because my dad listened to it because his dad listened to it. It's in my blood, I can't help it. Besides, have you ever given 40s music a really good listen? If you have, you'll know that there never were smoother voices in this history of forever. Silky smooth, buttery voices. People just don't sing like that anymore! Not to mention full orchestras backed the singers. Full orchestras! We're talking piano, drums, trumpets, trombones, bass (the upright kind), saxophone… I mean these guys really knew how to rock!

BWW Reviews: What's New? For Sentimental Reasons, Robyn Spangler Delivers Lush Tribute to the Linda Ronstadt-Nelson Riddle Collaboration at the Metropolitan Room

To borrow an analogy from Robyn Spangler, the Los Angeles-based singer (now spending more time in New York) who brought her show “Riddle, Ronstadt and Me” to the Metropolitan Room on Monday, January 12, a dress may be fine off the rack, but when tailored specifically for a particular body, it can uniquely highlight the physical assets of the woman wearing it. Likewise, the artistry of the musical arrangement comes when it wraps a familiar song around an individual's voice and style ands allow the song to be heard in a fresh, and hopefully, wonderful way.

'Parties-on-the-Plaza' to Power Up 2015 OFF CENTER FESTIVAL at Segerstrom Center, 1/24-30

Segerstrom Center for the Arts has expanded its 2015 Off Center Festival to include two Parties-on-the-Plaza (POP) Saturday, January 24 and Friday, January 30. The first POP will feature Orange County rocker Nick Waterhouse. On January 30, the party continues with the cumbia, afrobeat, trad funk fusion of Jungle Fire and the cold-blooded blend of deep soul, rare funk, and afro- disco (with a raw rock star edge!) of Orgone.

BWW Reviews: Janine Gilbert Carter Smoothly Mixes Jazz, Blues, and Gospel Vocal Styles In Solid Performance at the Metropolitan Room

Janine Gilbert Carter and her estimable trio personify classical traditions. Jazz, Blues, and Gospel are handled with ease and authority. Nothing gets insistently loud, experimentally unmelodic, or lyrically updated. Musicians take solos in turn. Embellishment is deft, textural, and, in my opinion, thankfully within the mood parameters of each song. There's appeal in familiarity when backed by solid talent. This is head-bobbing, shoulder-swaying entertainment.
